THE GIANT PANDA BEAR LOCATION The giant panda lives at the top of the Yangtze Basin (longest river in Asia, and the 3rd largest in the world). It is limited to small mountain ranges in provinces such as Sichuan, Gansus and Shanxi. The panda bear population is on the decline because of deforestation, farming, and poaching. The panda once lived in Vietnam and Burma. The panda bear habitat is a mountainous area with dense forest and lots of BAMBOO. They live in high altitudes that have not been disturbed by humans. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION Pandas are medium sized bears. Pandas are often portrayed as a roundish dog. They have white with black ears and circles around their eyes. Their arms and legs are black and with with a band going from their front arms to their back. Their tail is short and white. Of all the endangered bear species they have the most odd colour combination. Their colour is the same across their entire population. Baby pandas were not born with these special characteristics. After a few months baby pandas get there patterns. The odd colour patterns have caused lots confusion in its "scientific classification." Panda's size vary but statistics show that the weight of a male panda is about 175 to 250 pounds. The female weighs about 150 to 225 pounds. Their average height is about two to three feet tall when standing on four legs. Females are a little less, (about half a foot shorter). Males can reach five to six feet in length. The female panda is almost as long, sometimes the same. POPULATION One of the most shocking panda bear facts is the size of their total population. The worldwide total is less than 1600, and has put the panda on the endangered species list. Their ability to survive as a species is difficult. The most important factor is the destruction of their habitat. CRAZY PANDA FACTS The giant panda lifespan is difficult to determine in the wild. The average estimate is somewhere between 15 and 25 years, but some captive pandas have been reported to live past the age of 30. In the wild their life may be ended by poachers(people who hunt illegally). Early starvation can happen with bamboo loss. and they can't cross into places with healthy bamboo. The giant panda has a very special diet with mainly bamboo. It eats all parts of the bamboo including the stalk, leaves, and roots. This plant is low in nutrition. Also pandas digest a very low amount of what they eat, so they must eat large amounts to get enough nutrients. Pandas can eat 30 to 45 pounds of bamboo every day. Panda cubs eat about 5 to 10 pounds a day. When bamboo amounts decrease, populations decline, and is a part to their endangered status. They have changed features to help them eat their favorite food. Panda teeth are designed to break the thick bamboo. The back teeth are big for crushing material so it's easier to digest. They have a thumb like thing on there wrist, so it's easier to grasp bamboo stalks. This is in addition to their five fingers! PANDA DIET NICHE Pandas help to distribute the bamboo seeds over their areas. Apparently the furs of Panda’s help protect us from ghosts and helps predict the future in our dreams. LIMITING FACTORS Some limiting factors for the giant panda is temperature because pandas live in a cold damp areas and if its warm and dry the panda can not survive. Another factor is bamboo the panda mainly eats bamboo and if there is none the pandas population will decrease. WAYS TO SAVE THE PANDA The giant panda is classified at endangered. The giant panda conservation fund is building exhibits to prevent the extinction of pandas. Also the Chinese are fostering the agricultural land, therefore creating panda habitat. Finaly scientists in China and the United States have made progress in captive breeding Also panda bears are funny observe
