but do you know how to prevent it? We interviewed various people in the community
and here are their answers. Our first interviewer was Thomas Blake, a 17-year old
high schooler. -Thomas, how much do you know about the cardiovascular system?
"Um... well I know that you must exercise regularly
in order to keep it healthy. I also know that the heart is a muscle, the more you work it out, the stronger it gets."
-Do you know how to improve your cardiovascular health by physical activity? "Exercising daily. Running, sports, swimming, basically anything like that will improve your
heart's health." "I'd say at least an hour a day would keep you healthy. If you sit arround all day, that's not going to do you any good." -Thomas, are you aware that cardiovascular activites can lead to an improved ability to maintain weight, as well as reduce you risk of diabetes and some cancers? "I know that it can help prevent diabetes, but I didn't know it could also help prevent some cancers.
Well I guess since the heart is one of your more important part of your body, it makes sense." -Do you think the general population knows enough about cardiovascular health? "I don't think so. Because if we knew more about it, I doubt we would have as
many heart problems, as a population, as we do now. If we knew how to maintain our cardiovascular health better, I bet the rate for heart attacks would significantly decrease. Aerobics are cardiovascular exercises that require your cells to use oxygen to gain energy. Carrie Williams is an 11-year old middle schooler
who has much to say on the subject. Carrie, how much do you know about the cardiovascular system, or the heart?
"I know that the heart is very important, and it keeps you healthy if you
treat it right. I think it also helps fight diseases." Do you know how to improve your cardiovascular health by physical activity? "By exercising regularly. I think playing sports would help a lot, and
so would walking everyday. My mom, who is a nurse, told me that it's good
to exercise your heart because it's a muscle. The more you exercise your muscles,
the stronger you get." How much physical activity do you think is nessecary to stay fit? "I think if you exercise for at least an hour a day you will be healthy, but I think we all should exercise more to keep us fit. Are you aware that cardiovascular activities can lead to an improved ability
to maintain weight as well as help prevent diabetes and some cancers? "No, but if exercising for the heart is so good, how come we don't exercise
as much? I bet those activities help you in many more ways." -How much physical activity do you think is necessary to stay physically fit? This is the last question, do you think the general population knows enough about cardiovascular health? "Well, I think if we knew more about our heart we would be healthier. I know that
heart attacks can be deadly, but there is ways to be able to prevent a heart attack from
happening. Maybe if we learn more about it from our doctors and teachers we will
be less likely to have a heart attack." Let's see what Jessica White, aged 34, knows. -How much do you know about the cardiovascular system? "I know that the heart is vital to our health, and it must be exercised
regularly in order to keep your body functioning correctly. Since
the heart is a muscle, it must be exercised. Keeping your heart healthy prevents fatal conditions and diseases." -Do you know how to improve your cardiovascular health through physical activity? "If you do cardiovascular exercises, your heart will grow stronger. Personally, I
walk 3 miles a day to keep me fit and agile. If you raise your heart rate, I think it's
considered cardiovascular activity." -How much physicalactivity do you think is nessecary to
stay physically fit? "I believe if you exercise at least 3 times a week at a medium level
you will be physically healthy." -Are you aware that cardiovascular activities will lead to an improved ability to maintain your weight, as well as help prevent diabetes and some cancers? "I vaguely remember learning about the benefits from a public
annoucement. I know that if you treat your heart right, it will
protect you from disease. The heart provides the fuel to fro your
body, if the heart stops providing it properly, your body is going to
feel the effects." -Do you think the general population knows enough about the
cardiovascular system? "I think we know enough, but we don't use the information we learn.
However, we need to be more aware of the importance of cardiovascular
activities." The benefits of cardiovascular activity: Last is Gregory Smith, age 74. -How much do you know about the cardiovascular system? "I know a great deal about it, after all I've experienced a heart attack.
It was so sudden, I didn't know what hit me. My doctoer said it was because of my unhealthy diet and lack of exercise, I also used to smoke. After that, I researched ways to prevent anymore cardiovascular diseases and risks." -Do you know how to improve your cardiovascular health by physical activity? "Yes, I know go to an aerobics class every week. Cadiovascular activity is anyhting that requires your heartrate to increase above the resting heart rate, for a minimum of 20 minutes." -How much physical activity do you think is necessary to stay fit? "For someone around 30 years old or so, I think exercising at least
twice a week will do the body good. But for someone my age, it's
harder to move, let alone exercise." -Are you aware that cardiovascular activity can lead to an improved ability
to maintain weight, as well as help prevent diabetes and some cancers? "Yes, I just wish I knew that 30 years ago." -Do you think the general population knows enough about cardiovascular health? "No. Without a doubt I think America should learn more about cardiovascular health and put the knowledge to use! If I had known years ago what I know now, I would be much, much healthier." The Cardiovascular system's main functions are... To deliver materials throughout the body, such as oxygen. To remove wastes from your body, such
as carbon dioxide. 1 of every 3 deaths in the United
States is from the result of
cardiovascular diease. What is a heart attack? Stroke? A stroke, or "brain attack", is when blood
supply is cut off to a part of the brain. Prevention! Arterial Disease Two common arterial diseases are Atherolerosis and Arterislerosis. High Blood Pressure Normal blood pressure should be
120/80. 74 million Americans over the age of 20 has high blood pressure, or hypertension. Improved ability to control weight
Raises good cholesterol
Reduced risk of diabetes and some cancers
Reduced risk of high blood pressure and stroke Increased confidence
Improved ability to sleep
May decrease pain from joint disease
May reduce depression
Increased alertness. To seal cuts and wounds to prevent blood loss. A heart attack is when blood
flow to part of the heart is
dramatically reduced or blocked. To prevent cardiovascular complications, you should exercise often, maintain a diet
with a minimum amount of fats and sodium, and shouldn't smoke or do drugs. My Personal Opinion I believe America knows too little about cardiovascular health. If we knew more and put the knowledge to use, we, as a population, obviously would'nt have as many complications with our health as we do.
The first thing we should is to be educated and to educate. The more we know, the more we can positively affect each other. Additionally, we should exercise more. We have a variety of different sports for the able-bodied to play, and I know many of us have the capability to do so.
Diet, is also a major factor when discussing health. We all know how unhealthy and healthy the foods we eat are, but we tend to "forget" it. As an example, everyone knows the fast food restraunts Mcdonald's and Burger King. Though they do sell salads, yogurts, and other healthy options, the chains still sell foods that are filled with fats. The same fats that we are supposed to eat in small amounts. We all eat it, though we know it's unhealthy.It's convient, quick, and relatively cheap.
Smoking is the last main factor. Having family members who smoke, I directly see the affects of the addictive drug. Cardiovascular activities are important, and shouldn't be thought insignificant. Heart attack is the leading cause of death in America, are you next?
