A public is a relation among strangers
The address of public speech is both personal and impersonal
A public is constituted through mere attention
A public is the social space created by the reflexive circulation of discourse
Publics act historically according to the temporality of their circulation
A public is poetic world making (Warner 2002:675-124) “Counterpublics of sex and gender are teaching us to recognise in newer and deeper ways how privacy is publicly constructed. They are testing our understanding of how private life can be made publicly relevant. And they are elaborating not only new shared worlds and critical languages but also new privacies, new individuals, new bodies, new intimacies and new citizenships. In doing so, they have provoked visceral reactions, and necessarily so, since the visceral meaning of gender and sexuality is the very matter that they wish to disclose as publicly relevant. It is often thought, especially by outsiders, that the public display of private matters is a debased narcissism, a collapse of decorum, expressivity gone amok, [...but] such a display often has the aim of transformation.” (Warner 2002: 62) Redemption of 'the public' from majoritarianism
