The classical music of Azerbaijan is called mugam. It is usually a suite with poetry and instrumental interludes.
UNESCO proclaimed the Azerbaijan mugam tradition a MasterPiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity on November 7, 2003. Culture - Jazz Azerbaijan is a winner of Eurovision 2011 Song Contest The Eurovision Song Contest 2012 was the 57th annual Eurovision Song Contest. Following Ell & Nikki's win at the 2011 Contest, the festival was brought to the city of Baku, Azerbaijan. Ethnic groups: Azerbaijani 90.6%, Lezgic 2.2%, Russian 1.8%, other 3.9%

Languages: Azerbaijani (Turkic group) 89%, Russian 3%, and other 6%( Lezgic, Talish, etc.)
(2008 est.) The territory of Azerbaijan is rich with archeological monuments testifying to the fact that our country is one of the most ancient cradles of civilization.

Archeological finds, discovered in the Azykh, Taghlar, Damdjylly, Dashsalahly, and Gazma (Nakhichevan) caves and other historical sites, including the lower jaw of the Ashol man - Azykhantrop, who lived 300-400,000 years ago, also prove Azerbaijan to be one of the sites of the formation of ancient human beings.

Due to this finding, the territory of Azerbaijan has been included on the map of the most ancient inhabitants of Europe. 28 May 1918- The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) was the first successful attempt to establish a democratic and secular republic in the Muslim world. Restoration of State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan Azerbaijan carpets are relatively subdivided into 7 carpet schools according to geographical position, design, composition, color-selection and technical peculiarities.

Lenkaran is famous with its
aromatic tea and citrus fruits. Nabran is the largest
recreational region close to the Russia-Azerbaijan border. It is located in a northeast part of Azerbaijan on the bank of Caspian Sea and surrounded by beautiful forest. Ganja is Azerbaijan's second-largest city with a population of around 313,300. Shaki is situated in northern Azerbaijan on the southern part of the Greater Caucasus mountain range.
The Palace of Shaki Khans which was a summer residence of Shaki Khans, still remains one of the most visible landmarks of Shaki. Constructed in 1762 without a single nail is one of the most marvelous monuments of its epoch.  

Shaki has some famous dishes,
including girmabadam, zilviya, piti, a stew reated with meat and potatoes and prepared in a terracotta pot. Karabakh is a geographic region in present-day southwestern Azerbaijan, extending from the highlands of the Lesser Caucasus down to the lowlands between the rivers Kura and Aras.
The Collapse of USSR in late 1991 was followed by the change in the geopolitical situation on post-Soviet area.
During military campaign of 1992 and 1993, Armenia has occupied 20 percent of the Azerbaijan territory.
The escalation of the armed conflict in 1993 has brought the UN Security Council to the decision to adopt 4 resolutions in 1993: 822, 853, 874, 884 about unconditional withdrawal of Armenian forces from Azerbaijan territories, which have not been implemented yet. As the result of the conflict 1 million people became refugees, 20000 Azerbaijanis were killed, 4866 missing, 50000 became IDPs - Internally Displaced Persons

Kechel (bald) and Kosa Azerbaijan is home to the first known fireplace and one of the ancient human habitations in the human history that date back to 700,000 to 500,000 years ago. The Azikh Cave, which is also the largest cave in Azerbaijan covering 8000 square meters, is one of the human sites in Azerbaijan The Land of Fire In Gobustan National Park in Azerbaijan you can find around 6000 rock engravings which date back from 5,000 – 40,000 years ago.
Ancient rock engravings The industrial settlement of Neft Dashlary, which means oil rocks, is the first and the largest town on stilts that was constructed on the Caspian Sea. The construction commenced in 1947 and was built in phases.

26 – 28.10.2012 Baku is another city where the City Challenge was held. It’s main element was the GT car race, famous of the prestigious FIA World Championship struggle.

The City Challenge started with a previously unseen car parade in the center of Baku on October 25 involving different car brands from the top sports car manufacturers - BMW, Corvette, Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz. The 2015 European Olympic Games
will be the inaugural edition of the European Games, a multi-sport event for European athletes. It will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan in 2015 Azerbaijan at the Summer Olympics Azerbaijan competed at the 2012 Summer olympic in London, United kingdom, from 27 July to 12 August 2012. A total of 53 athletes, 39 men and 14 women, competed in 15 sports. Azerbaijan left London with a total of 10 medals (2 gold, 2 silver, and 6 bronze), which doubled the nation's overall medal count at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. This was also the nation's most successful Olympics, winning the largest number of medals received at a single games.
