Training and Development The process of providing employees with specific skills or helping them correct deficiencies in their performance. Employee Training Employee Development An effort to provide employees with the abilities the organization will need in the future. Development Training versus Development Now and Future Training Focus Scope Time Frame Goal Current Job Current and Future Job Individual Employees Work Group or Organization Immediate Long Term Fix Current Skill Deficit Prepare for Future Work Demands Managers Must Consider if the Training is: Effective Training Is it a solution to the problem? Are the goals of training clear and realistic? Is training a good investment? Will the training work? Not all performance problems call for training Does Training Provide the Solution? Many are outside the worker's control so are not affected by training. Example: Unclear or conflicting requests, morale problems, and poor quality materials Is the duration or frequency enough for desired effects? Are Training Goals Realistic? Will the cost of training be returned to the company? Good Business Investment? How can Corporate Culture effect training effectiveness? Will the Training Work? Some companies reimburse the educational expenses of employees who take classes on their own.
