DELETION A simple way to alter the structure of a word is to omit particular speech segmants. There are two main speech segments that ar typically delete consonant and weak syllables one Occurs whenever the unstreed or weak syllable of a multi-syllabic word is omitted. weak syllable deletion example: banana become nana
potato become tato
telephone become tephone
Dinosour become disour In rapid speech many speakers use a /z/ for th when saying "is there" for Is "that" example: Is there= zere
Is that = zat Consonant deletion occurs whenever a consonant in syllable o-initial or syllable-final position is omitted. example:
