Year they joined: July 20, 1871
Reasons for joining confederation:
- the colony was in dept and they knew that Canada was whom they could as for help
- wanted to be able to chose their own government and make decisions of their own
- BC and Ottawa were scared that the US would try to control the colonies
A person involved in the province joining confederation:
- Amor De Cosmos
--> he was born on August 29 1825 and was the leader of the pro-Confederation movement
--> created a newspaper, "British Colonist" to share the ideas about responsible government and confederation
--> elected to the government to continue to fight for joining confederation Province: Alberta
Year they joined: September 1, 1905
Reasons for joining Confederation:
- didn't have enough money to satisfy everyone's needs but making a province
will allow them to collect taxes and pay for them
- the economy now also included farming, logging, mining and the construction
of the railway and so many people were entering the territory. They thought
that they also deserved a government like Ontario's
A person involved in the province joining confederation:
- Sir Frederick W. A. G. Haultain
--> he was born on November 25, 1857, was a member of the council of Northwest Territories and later became a member of the Legislative Assembly
--> wanted to have a responsible government and political power for their future so he suggested to make one province Province: Saskatchewan
Year they joined: September 1, 1905
Reasons for joining confederation:
- the same purposes as Alberta as they were originally part of Northwest Territories
A person involved in the province joining confederation:
- Sir Frederick W. A. G. Haultain Province: Manitoba
Year they joined: July 15, 1870
Reasons for joining confederation:
- the Metis were scared that they would lose their rights since Rupert's Land and Northwest Territories were sold to Canada
- having their own government would allow them to keep their religion
A person involved in the province joining confederation:
- Louis Riel
--> he was born on October 22, 1844 at the Red River Colony and was the leaders of the Metis
--> created a Metis government and stopped Canadians from entering, took over Upper For Garry and had prisoners
--> negotiated with the Federal governemt to end the Red River Rebellion Province: Ontario
Year they joined: July 1, 1867
Reasons for joining confederation:
- British Colonies helped to build railroads and had no more money for a transcontinental railroad but forming a country would help earn money for it
- the UPC had hard times making important decisions and decided that forming a new country would help the situation
- Great Britain helped the American's fight in a civil war over slavery but lost and they were scared that the winners would take revenge on them. If they formed a new country, the American's might not want to hurt their new neighbors
A person involved in the province joining confederation:
- Sir John Alexander Macdonald
--> he was born on January 10 or 11, 1815 and was chosen to be a member of the Conservatives Party
--> was able to bring the French and English politicians together to formed a government and later became the co-prime minister
--> to handle the economic and political problems, they decided to join the Maritime colonies to form a bigger country Province: Quebec
Year they joined: July 1, 1867
Reasons for joining confederation:
- The same purposes as Ontario since they were both originally part of the UPC
A person involved in the province joining confederation:
- Sir George-Étienne Cartier
--> he was born on September 6, 1814 and was chosen to be a member of the Province of Canada's Assembly. He soon was the leader of the political party
--> was co-prime minister along with Sir John A. Macdonald and agreed that created a larger country would solve their problems
--> convinced the French that Confederation was a good idea and that they would get their own province Province: Nova Scotia
Year they joined: July 1, 1867
Reasons for joining confederation:
- Charles Tupper thought is was a good idea for
Nova Scotia to join confederation but his people
were against it
A person involved in the province joining confederation:
- Joseph Howe
--> was a newspaper owner who writes a lot of political stories
--> wanted a responsible government but realized the people didn't want it when Charles Tupper brought them into confederation
--> too late to back down so he helped his province into the federal government and made sure they weren't treated poorly Province: New Brunswick
Year they joined: July 1, 1867
Reasons for joining confederation:
- give a larger market for their goods by using the Intercolonial railway
- have defense over U.S. if they tried to expand northward into their province

- Sir Samuel Leonard Tilley
--> born on May 8, 1818 and fought for responsible government soon becoming premier of New Brunswick
--> after several talks with Canadian leaders, he realized the people of New Brunswick do not wish to join Confederation but a year later they changed their minds
--> was appointed lieutenant-governor after joining confederation Province: Prince Edward Island
Year they joined: July 1, 1873
Reasons for joining confederation:
- Landlords in England owned most of their land but joining Confederation would allow them to buy and own their land since Canada decided to buy the land from the landlords
- could not pay the money they owe for building the railway but Canada agreed to help them
A person involved in the province joining confederation:
- James Colledge Pope
--> born on June 11, 1826 and won his seat as a Conservative
--> was soon a part of the Exclusive Council and premier but declined joining confederation as their offers did not meet P.E.I's needs
--> forced to join Confederation but promised his people that he would get a better deal from Canada Province: Newfoundland And Labrador
Year they joined: March 31, 1949
Reasons for confederation:
- Britain no longer wanted to pay the cost to support them
- Canada offered to help them build roads and railways
A person involved in the province joining confederation:
- Joseph Roberts Smallwood
--> born December 24, 1900 and was a reporter
--> at a National Convention to decided whether to join confederation or not he believed it was a good choice to join
--> convinced his people into Confederation and went to Ottawa to see what they had to offer Newfoundland Province: Yukon
Year they joined: June 13, 1898
Reasons for joining confederation:
- the gold rush attracted many Americans and people were scared that U.S. would try to take over the area
- had a larger population and was more active than any part of the Northwest Territories
A person involved in the territory joining confederation:
- Samuel Benfield Steele
--> he was born on January 5, 1849 and was a member of the NWMP
--> commanded the troops in the Northwest Rebellion
--> discovered the gold in Yukon and acted as the government authority Province: Nunavut
Year they joined: April 1, 1999
Reasons for joining confederation:
- needed their own government to be able to make their own decisions since the Canadian government never negotiated with them
- wanted their land back because Canada always used the resources without asking
A person involved in the territory joining confederation:
- Paul Okalik
--> had a job at the Tunngavik Federation of Nunavut and later went back to school in Ottawa
--> wanted to help his people and got a seat in the Legislative Assembly which led him to being premier The first Prime Minister of Canada Name: Sir John A McDonald
Year he was Prime Minister: 1867-1873 & 1878-1891
Contributions made:
1. Helped create the Liberal Conservative Party
2. First to suggest Confederation to expand Canada
3. Constructed the Canadian Pacific Railway so the Western part of Canada could be a place to settle Province: Northwest Territories

Reasons for joining confederation:
- Renamed Rupert's Land and the North-Western Territory to create Northwest Territories and their land slowly changed and became other provinces
