Simple Machines
Wallace and Gromit
Wallace has invented a "Tellyscopio" to control the television. Make a list of any simple machines that you see. There are many!
What did you see?
What are simple
machines?
Simple machines are machines with very little parts and they help us do things
Let's look at the six simple machines
#1: The Pulley
What is a pulley?
A wheel that turns on an axis with a rope. We use a pulley to
raise
and
lower
objects
#2: The wedge
The wedge is used to separate two objects. Formed by two inclined planes.
#3: Inclined Plane
Also known as a ramp, it is used move objects across distances
#4: The Lever
A rigid bar that is used to raise an object on one side
Three main parts:
Fulcrum: Point of support
Effort: the force made
Load: where we exert the force
CLASS THREE LEVER:
The effort is between the fulcrum and the load
#5: The Screw
A type of inclined plane, with a spiral on the outside and a point at the end.
#6: The wheel and axle
Consists of one or two wheels moving onthe same axel, like on a bicycle or car.
How much do you know?
1. A simple machine helps us...
Do the job easier
/
Work harder

2. An example of a simple machine...
A bicycle
/
A broom

3. This simple machine raises and lowers...
A pulley
/
a lever

4. An inclined plane is like....
a ramp
/
scissors
The compound machines
They have two simple machines working together.
For example: the bicycle and the scissors
#1:
Talk with a partner and discuss what kind of simple machine is a slide
#2:
Discuss what kind of simple machine is a swing
#3:
Find three simple machines in the classroom
Objective
Learn what are the simple machines
How they are useful
Reflection
Six types of simple machines:
1. The pulley
2. The wedge
3. The inclined plane
4. The lever
5. The wheel and axel
6. The screw
Could you eat soup without a spoon?
Imagine life without swings and slides
at the playground!
Or if no one invented the wheel!
CLASS 1 LEVER:
The fulcrum is between the load and the effort
1. What is the simple machine that Wallace uses to make the snowman?
A. Lever B. Wedge C. Inclined Plane D. Pulley

2. What did Gromit use to make a ice sculpture?
A. Pulley B. Wedge C. Wheel and Axle D. Screw

3. If you wanted to take away snow in front of your house, what kind of lever would you use?
A. Class 1 B. Class 2 C. Class 3 D. Pulley
CLASS TWO LEVER:
The load is between the fulcrum and the effort
Take out your scissors. Where is the effort, fulcrum and load?
What class of lever is it?
1. What is the simple machine that Wallace uses to make the snowman?
A. Lever B. Wedge

C. Inclined Plane
D. Pulley

2. What did Gromit use to make a ice sculpture?
A. Pulley
B. Wedge
C. Wheel and Axle D. Screw

3. If you wanted to take away snow in front of your house, what kind of lever would you use?
A. Class 1 B. Class 2
C. Class 3
D. Pulley
