The Amazing Race! By: Marc Elliston What is the Space Race? The Space Race was a branch of the Cold War between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. to show the world their technological superiority. How it All Began The idea origionally came from Nazi Germany in the 1930's when they were trying to make missiles. After World War 2 the U.S., Russia, and U.K. each attracted some rocket scientists from Germany. Tensions between U.S.S.R. and the U.S. sparked the Cold War. Better Missiles Russia needed missiles that could reach longer distances. Out of these missiles, rockets were born. Sputnik 1 The first artificial satellite to successfully orbit the earth was Sputnik 1 launched by the U.S.S.R. on October 4th, 1957. Names to Know Laika A dog who was the first animal to go into space on Sputnik 2 Yuri Gagarin A Russian who on April 12th, 1961 became the first man in space. Alexei Leonov The first man to preform a successful space walk in 1965. Neil Armstrong &
Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin These two American astronauts became the first men to step foot on the moon. The Apollo-Soyuz Test Mission On July 15th, 1975 a mission carrying both Russian and American astronauts was launch. This marked the end between the struggle for space between the U.S. and U.S.S.R.
