Managing External Influences Strategic Planning 4. Evaluate the effectiveness of the way that First is meeting the challenge of providing sustainable solutions to transport needs.
2. How does it benefit First to work closely with government in designing its transport service
strategy? In your answer, show why it is important to work with local government. Overall Conclusion for each Question Questions 1. What do the letters PESTEL stand for? Can you identify any links between some of these
factors, for example between political and legal factors affecting a business? What other
links can you make? 3. Analyze how effective First has been in responding to changes in demand for bus services. Question 1 Question 2 Question 3 Question 4 FirstGroup plc is the leading transport operator in the UK and North America. With revenues of over £6.5 billion per annum and approximately 124,000 employees we transport more than 2.5 billion passengers every year. First Student - As the largest provider of student transportation in North America, with a fleet of approximately 54,000 yellow school buses, we carry some six million students a day across 38 States in the USA and nine Provinces and Territories in Canada. First Transit - We are one of the largest private sector providers of transit management and contracting in North America. Our Services division is the largest private sector provider of vehicle maintenance and ancillary support services in North America. Greyhound - We are the only national provider of scheduled intercity coach transportation services in the US and Canada. We provide scheduled passenger services to approximately 3,800 destinations throughout the US and Canada, with 20 million passengers travelling 5.6 billion miles every year. UK Bus - We are a leading bus operator in the UK with a fleet of 8,000 buses, carrying approximately 2.6 million passengers every day. We serve a vast number of communities including 40 of the UK's largest towns and cities. Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Environmental, Legal One link or connection between social and political is that buses really help with the environment. Not only is the government trying to reduce CO2 emission levels but more and more people are becoming aware of the importance of our environment. This is a connections since both parties are on the 'same track.' Legal and Political is an easy connection because their are rules and regulations regarding CO2 emissions and well as laws. These two parties also link to the social aspect and environmental. Lindsey Scheltema's Answers Lindsey Scheltema's Answer "First believes in providing local solutions, therefore it concentrates on working closely with local government" First has many routes and services that help at serve local school and bus routes for elderly people. Both of these services is run with the government's help. One of the main government policies affecting transport services is the reduction of CO2 emissions, so First works with the government to try and lower these emissions. It is very important to work with local governments to make sure that all rules and regulations are followed. It is also easier to bring ideas forward if you already have a good relationship in place and you know people. The government will also help companies and businesses that work with them to better improve the company. Lindsey Scheltema's Answer First has done a very good job responding to the demand for bus services over the past few years. Instead of trying to compete with cars First is taking an approach of complementing cars. First is always trying to make it easier for people to switch between driving and using the public transit. For example First has its Park&Ride service which gives an exempt to most extreme parking fees. These are just some of the many ways that First has been responding to the demand for bus services. Overall First is doing a very good job providing effective public transportation for citizens all across the UK and many students in North America. Lindsey Scheltema's Answer First is very effective by the way that they face challenges and how they overcome obstacles. They find numerous ways to interest people in riding public transport and they know how to keep their interest. Most people are on cellphones 24/7 and or on the internet. First has found a way to set up an alerting service for passenger so they can receive up-to-date train information by either a text message or email. Erin Wismer's Answers PESTEL stands for Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Environmental and Legal. Connection that could be made relating to PESTEL would be, social connections. Bus companies would have to keep up with the social aspects of a town to connecting with the government to regulate how many people they could expect to ride the bus bring in the income, therefore also effecting the economic aspect. The advancing technology in today's society also connects with legal aspects in a business. Businesses legally have to update their business to the most safe and new technology to run their buses. Erin Wismer's Answers It is important for businesses such as First to work closely with the government because it is proves more effective to help the community with the bus routs. When a business works closely with the government they build relationships in which supplies them with extra help when improvements are needed. A close relationship with then government is all around helpful for a business. Gunoh Lee's Answers PESTEL describes a type of change that takes place in the external business environment

I could have think of a link between Technological, and Environmental. For example, First's technology has made a bus to be able to carry more people per journey, this means they have reduced amount of bus required for a journey. Fewer bus necessary means that First has reduced CO2 emission. Gunoh Lee's Answers Local government has benefit First by privatize bus service. It has kept prices lower, and companies can give more efficient services for customers. First has concentrated on working closely with local government by providing services to school and elderly people. Gunoh Lee's Answers First has been really affectively making more customers to use their service by providing new and better service they demand. One of first's example of responding demand was providing high quality of school buses for students. First's business is also affected by taxation. Higher tax on fuel and congestion charges make more customers to use bus and/or train. First also strives to provide easier condition for people to switch between transportation. Erin Wismer's Answers First is very effective in keep their business up to date with demands in today's society. For example, with more and more old people reaching the point to needing to ride the bus, First has lowered the floors to allow easier access to get in and out. First has also met demands with creating Smart Cards, a faster and easier way for those who don't have change to pay for their way on the bus. Erin Wismer's Answers First takes challenges, such as a rising population of older people and helps by advancing their bus lines with the ability to lower the floor of the bus so it is easier for them to step on and off the bus without injuries. There are several links between many of these factors. As the recent “Green” trend grows as a social issue, creating a cleaner environment has become a large scale focus on many political platforms in order to gain popular vote, governments are tightening up on pollution laws, therefore companies must compete with each other to develop new and more efficient technologies, as well as reviewing their products by-products and what is a tolerable amount. This can greatly effect the economy as many companies cannot afford the upgrades which can sometimes run in the millions of dollars – This is just one chain reaction which can impact many lives, for better or for worse. Sean Pentecost Answers Sean Pentecost Answer It is very beneficial for First to be in partnership with the government as they are then given priority over consideration of other bus companies and their routes. First may receive beneficial tax breaks, as well as a steady stream of guaranteed income paid to them for senior citizens, whom may choose not to even use the bus systems. It is important to work with the local government because collaborating with them would give you access to important technology or information that could lead to an improvement in the efficiency of the company. (Better delivery of service) It is evident by the large success of first that they know, and are in touch with their customer base, by offering special pick-ups for elderly people who ride the buses because they are safe and convenient, park & ride systems for people to get around in congested areas easier, using more efficient vehicles to show that they care about the environment which “Green” supporters will tend to lean towards, they use two-floor buses to carry twice as many people with half as many vehicles – which is important with the recent increasing demand for public transportation. Sean Pentecost Answer First recognizes that if everyone were to drive their own vehicle we would be seriously over- polluting our planet as well as using unecessary amounts of fossil fuels which are a non-renewable resource, and create toxic emissions when burned. By providing cost effective, convenient and gas efficient public transportation they become the clear choice to those who consider the sustainability of transportation as a whole. Sean Pentecost Answer Alex Cambell Answer We all know what the PESTEL acroynym is but I did find some links between them.-economic and enironmental share a link because these days environmentally friendly products tend to be on the higher price end of items. They will soon become cheaper when they are more efficent-technological and environment share a link because the environmentally friendly transportation methods will only continue to become more advanced and easier to use/access-social and environmental share a link because more and more people are becoming focused on the environment. it becomes a social aspect of people's lives to try and make their ecological footprint smaller Alex Cambell Answer Alex Cambell Answer First benefits by working with the government because it allows them to have more control and power with such a high organization. Also, working with the government will give them a large status around the country because many people listen to the government. First would also receive more work from the government because the government knows where work is needed and they company can be hired for jobs. Again, First can also keep their company up to standards and regulations set our by the government if they work tightly with them. First has done a great job on the changing demand. They are always out to meet the customers needs and thats the motto you need for a successful client base. They have also adapted to environmental needs which is great for the environment and catches the eyes of customers. First has lots of money to adapt to these changes and they use it efficently. Alex Cambell Answer First is doing great at providing sustainable transportations, First adapts to transportation needs and is always there when a bus, or train is needed. Political
