What really is matter?
Anything that takes up space and has mass (weight).
Matter is made up of atoms.
Like air, plastic, metal, wood, cloth, etc.
What is Matter?
Matter, Atoms, Elements, Compounds, Mixtures, and Solutions
Is it an element, compound, mixture, or solution?
Compounds: Materials made up of two or more elements combined.
Ex. Carbon Dioxide and Table Salt
If all the atoms in the substance are the same then it is an element.
Also called the simplest substance.

Ex.: aluminum, zinc, copper
Mixture: Material made up of two or more substances that can be separated by physical means.
Heterogeneous Mixture
Homogeneous Mixture
A mixture in which different materials can easily be distinguished.
A mixture in which the different materials are uniformly spread out.
