What Is A Stargate? A Stargate is a fictional alien device that transports matter to other planets, galaxies, and even across the universe. (Based from the Stargate Franchise [Good Series, I reccomend watching it if you haven't.]) Here's some pictures... Milky Way Gate Pegasus Gate Universe Gate Pegasus Spacegates Pegasus Gates are the third type of Stargate designed by the Ancients. The one shown is in Atlantis. Pegasus gates are not known to have a ramp as the Milky Way and Universe gates do, but instead are in the ground itself. The symbols light up instead of spin, making manual dialing impossible. These gates supersede the older models, meaning in proximity to and older type, the Pegasus gate will be defaulted to. Universe stargates are thought to be the oldest type of gate, a sort of prototype. The picture shows the gate on the intergalactic starship, Destiny. These gates have a limited range, much smaller than the newer types. Dialing out-of-galaxy or even across the current galaxy is near impossible with normal power consumption. The whole gate spins, chevrons and all. Instead of chevrons locking, the gate spins until the symbol has reached the topmost part of the gate, then the symbol lights up, and the gate continues spinning until all symbols are input, at which time the gate activates. These gates do have a ramp which has lights on it that light up when the gate activates. This is the first stargate to be discovered by modern humans. This is not the only stargate on Earth, as another is later discovered in Antarctica and is shown to be Earth's first stargate. The Earth gate was not found with a DHD (DHD explained later), and as such is dialed by a computer manipulating the control crystals of the gate. This type of gate can be manually dialed by spinning the inner ring of the game when enough power is provided to unlock in the inner ring. The Stargate is a ring shaped device a little less than two stories tall. It is composed of a substance called Naquadah, which can remain intact for millions of years. Massive quantities of power are needed to provide any sort of function. The mineral is a superconductor, allowing the use of any type of electrical power to be used. When the gate activates, a "Kawoosh" (Unstable Matter Vortex) shoots out of the gate, de-molecularizing anything it touches. Once it recedes back into the gate, it is safe to enter the wormhole which has formed inside the inner ring. An example of this Unstable Matter Vortex is shown below. Most gates come with a DHD. The DHD is the quickest method of dialing the gate, as the user only need press the symbols on the DHD in the correct sequence to activate the gate. The DHD contains a power source which powers the gate for millions of years. Some examples of DHDs are shown below. Milky Way DHD Pegasus DHD Pegasus DHDs only have 36 symbols, as does the gate. One reason Pegasus gates have less symbols might be because the Pegasus Galaxy is smaller than the Milky Way. These DHDs are classified by different constellations and a blue activation button. Milky Way DHDs have 38 symbols, though interestingly enough, the gate has 39. The reason for the extra symbol is unknown. These DHDs are classified by real constellations and an orange activation button. The Alterans, also known as "The Gatebuilders", "The Ancients", and "The Ancestors" created the Stargate network sometime around 50 million years ago. They originally lived in the Ori Galaxy, but left after philosphical disputes. The Ancients then settled in the Milky Way, where the first gates were created. They are believed to have originally settled on the planets Dakara and Earth then slowly spread throughout the galaxy. However, a terrible plague struck the Ancients and they left the Milky Way in their city ship "Atlantis," headed to the Pegasus Galaxy. Spacegates are exactly what the name implies, gates in space. The only known type of gate to be a spacegate are Pegasus gates. These gates are usually in orbit around a planet. They are held in orbit by the gravitational forces of the planet, but also by the three thrusters on the edge of the gate. If the gate is ever knocked out of position, the thrusters will engage, placing it back in its correct position. The event horizon of the wormhole is the blue "puddle" inside the inner ring of the gate which ripples. It looks like water, prompting nicknames to the gate such as "Puddle of Standing Water" and "The Well." To be transported, an object must FULLY enter the event horizon. The object is first de-molecularized, stored in the gate buffer, transported through the wormhole, stored in the dialed gate buffer, then re-molecularized, exiting the gate at the same velocities the object entered. Total travel time, about 3 tenths of a second in most cases. Wormholes are strictly one way when transporting matter, though energy waves can pass both ways. Because of this, radio waves, EM waves, infrared rays, even time dilation and gravity can be transmitted through the gate. If a gate is underwater however, the water around the gate will not pass through the event horizon to the dialed gate, the same situation with gasses. This is likely a safety precaution. If something is placed a few nanometers in front of the gate, it can prevent matter from re-materializing. Known versions of this include... Earth's Iris... And... Atlantis's Shield. If an abject is mostly obstructing the inside of the inner ring, it can prevent a wormhole from even connecting. Many civilizations buried their gate as a way of keeping enemies from coming through. If a planet posses 2 Gates, the gate with a DHD, gate that is not obstructed, or the newer model of gate will supersede the other. Gates can be destroyed by powerful weapons. The main method used is sending power into the gate to send the naquadah it is made up of to cause it to explode. One such device that has a side effect of blowing gates up is the Attero Device. Energy builds up in the Event Horizon of an active gate until critical overload is reached. The blast is known to be seen from space as it is as powerful as twelve atomic bombs detonating at once. Another device that can destroy gates is one possibly invented by the Ancients, but most likely not intended for destroying gates. The process is relatively the same but energy is transferred through the gate and absorbed into the naquadah. The result is the same, the gate exploding in the end. The process can take much longer however if something is in front of the gate such as an iris or shield. In both instances of the devices used, the gate was unable to shutdown past the thirty-eight minute limit. The Atlantis gate exploding, the blast contained by a modified city shield. Other types of gates include... Orlin's Mini Gate Ori Supergate Asuran Satellite Weapon Tollan Stargate This "Minigate" was created by the Ancient Orlin (in human form) to get back to a planet after he knew Earth wouldn't let him use their stargate. The stargate burned out after its one use though it did successfully connect. The Asuran Satellite Weapon was created by a machine race called the Asurans. It was made to destroy Atlantis after the Atlantias themselves had destroyed much of the fleet Asuran fleet in a preemptive strike. The satellite is equipped with an 8 chevron Pegasus stargate, hyperdrive, and shields. Once the gate has activated, a beam is fired through and directed at the desired target. The shield are powered by the beam and since the Asurans had been directing the attack and could produce limitless ZPMs, the beam could remain active indefinitly. The Tollan stargate was created by the combined efforts of the advanced races known as the Tollan and Nox. The gate was created after the Tollan's original planet had become uninhabitable. They then relocated to a planet without a Stargate then created their own. It is presumed buried or destroyed after their battle with the Goa'uld (more bad guys). McKay-Carter Intergalactic Gate Bridge The McKay-Carter Interglactic Gate Bridge, or simple known as the "Gate Bridge" was created by the combined efforts of Dr. Rondey McKay and Colonel Samantha Carter. The gate bridge consists of 34 Stargates, 17 from the Milky Way, 17 from Pegasus. The gates are spaced apart from each other between the Milky Way and Pegasus galaxies with the Midway Station being in the center. Midway is where the two gate networks meet. When the proper macro is uploaded, one need only dial the Midway Station from Atlantis or the SGC and they are fowarded from one gate to the next along the chain instead of being rematerialzed. Once they reach the Midway station, they are rematierialzed and then need only exit one gate network, and continue the journey through the other. The bridge was created so that Atlantis may dial Earth without the use of a ZPM and Earth get to Atlantis without a 4 week journey on the Daedalus. A 24 hour quarntine was put in effect later on so that a virus from Pegasus would not spread to the Milky Way. The Midway Station was destroyed when the Wraith managed to gain access. The IOA deemed it an unncessesary risk to rebuild, and thus the gates have remained floating in space, possibly resuming their "Gate Bridge" duties one day. One of the Pegasus gates was taken from the chain after Atlantis's gate exploded due to the Attero Device. A supergate is made up of individual segments and is powered by a gravitational singularity. They are large enough to fit entire ships through and transport them across galaxies. They were created by the Ori to transport their war ships to the Milky Way and used by Oddyssey to get to the Ori Galaxy. If you're interestedFull transcript

Youtube videos. Extra Info: Atlantis is a city ship designed by the Ancients. It is described to house as many rooms as Manhattan island, though wheather or not that was a joke is unknown, it is quite massive. The city also has a Stardrive, Hyperdrive, Shield, Inertial Dampeners, it's own Stargate, and many MANY more rooms. The Goa'uld are the alien race that once rules much of the Milky Way galaxy. They are small, snake like organisms that inhabit the bodies of others, mainly the Jaffa. However, due to the help of the SGC, rebel Jaffa, and other allies, their power has been greatly diminished and only the Lucian Alliance are thought to remain powerful. Jaffa Symbiote (Goa'uld) The Wraith are the main enemy in the Pegasus Galaxy. They dominate most of the galaxy, and act much like the Goa'uld once did. However, they "Feed" on their victims instead of enslaving them as that is the way they survive. They feed by use of a pointy.. thing.. that comes out of their hand. They have tried to destroy Atlantis several times, and 10,000 years ago, forced the Ancients out of Atlantis, keeping it hidden under the ocean, safe, for anyone who would arrive in the future as the Atlantis Expedition did. Their power has been greatly diminished also due mostly in part to the efforts of the Atlantis Expedition. Destiny: Destiny is a massive Ancient space ship launched sometime around 50 million years ago. Several ships were launched ahead of Destiny to sead planets with gates as to retrieve supplies in order for crew to survive. The project was forgotten by the Ancients after their intrest turned twoard Ascension. The ship was inhabited for the first time since its launch by a group of military and civilians. They had been researching the ninth chevron required to dial Destiny when their base came under attack, and were forced to go through. Destiny SGC: The SGC (Stargate Command) is where the Stargate Program on Earth takes place. It is located in Cheyenne Mountain 28 floors below NORAD outside of Colorado Springs, Colorado. The program is a secret on Earth, and has remains so for nearly 15 years. There are around 20 SG teams which go through the gate on a daily basis exploring new planet and helping others. It was from here that most of what we know about Stargate was learned. Control Room View of the Stargate in SGC Thanks for watching The McKay-Carter Interglactic Gate Bridge, or simple known as the "Gate Bridge" was created by the combined efforts of Dr. Rondey McKay and Colonel Samantha Carter. The bridge was created so that Atlantis may dial Earth without the use of a Z.P.M. (power thingy, rare) and Earth get to Atlantis without a 4 week journey on the Daedalus (Earth's starship).
