WHAT IS TECHNOLOGY...?
The branch of knowledge dealing with engineering and applied sciences.
INTRODUCTION
Technological determinism is a reductionist theory that presumes that a society's technology drives the development of its social structure and cultural values.
The term coined by Thorstein Veblen (1857–1929), an American sociologist and economist.
Belief that technology is the agent of social change
Technology moulds society and changes our behaviours and interactions
TECHNOLOGICAL DETERMINISM THEORY
Technology is GOOD
Is Technology Good or Bad?
What it States
Technological Determinism argue that technology itself forms the way that we interact with each other and how we think.

It states that people have little control over the fact that how technological evolution will be adopted in a society.

Technology functions with various social economic and cultural forces to bring a change.

What is DETERMINISM..?
There are 4 main theories of technology & society.

Determinism is one of them.
DETERMINISM
KINDS OF TECHNOLOGICAL DETERMINISM

Such determinism which view technology as developing independent from social concerns.

Such determinism which has more passive view of the way technology interacts with socio-political situations

General Idea
Technological determinism share two general ideas:
Development of technology follows a predictable, traceable path largely beyond cultural or political influence.

Technology has effects on societies that are inherent, rather than socially conditioned or produced because that society organizes itself to support and further develop a technology once it has been introduced.

There are 2 types of Determinism
Technological Determinism
Social Determinism
Technological Determinism
: It argues that technology itself forms the way that we interact with each other & how we think.

Social Determinism
: It argues that it is society that drives the evolution of technology. Our cultural beliefs and values, morals and existing social customs will determine how we use technology and how it impacts society. They argue we have options for how technology will develop and that the outcome will be decided by the nature of our society. Society influences technology. This view is the opposite of the technological determinists.
Soft Determinism
Technology is BAD
Marx often seen as a technological determinist because of statements such as

“The windmill gives you society with the feudal lord: the steam mill with the industrial capitalist”

McLuhan denounces this position because for him the most important point is the way technologies structure us

…other theorists contend that new media alters the ‘communicative relationship’ allowing for a diversity of relationships

…or that a new technology creates a precondition for cultural change
