Mine-is-Better Habit
Begins in early childhood
This is as old as humankind
Asserting its superiority is an expression of ego
Destroys objectivity
Prompts us to prefer self-flattering errors to unpleasant realities
(Ruggiero, 2012, p.54)
Face Saving
Natural tendency that comes from the ego
Comes after we say something that compromises the image others have of us
This is a defense mechanism
Protects our image
Example: "He made me do it."
Dangerous form: Rationalization
(Ruggiero, 2012, p. 55)
Resistance to Change
Rejecting new ideas and perspectives without examining them fairly
Reasons for resistance to change: Laziness, regard for tradition, and fear
(Ruggiero, 2012, p. 58)
Paying more attention to what others think instead of what is right and true
Compromising beliefs
Harmful conformity = what is done instead of thinking in order to belong to a particular group or to avoid being different
(Ruggiero, 2012, pp. 58-59)

Generalization: Classifying people according to common elements
Overgeneralization: Go beyond boundaries of reasonableness

Deceiving yourself about situations
Examples: Deceiving yourself about symptoms of illnesses, reasons for divorce, alcohol/drug dependency
Deceiving yourself about a competency
