differently if circumstances
had been different. Look at the past unreal conditional statements in inverted form without if .
If I had known it would take up so much room, I wouldn’t have bought it.
Had I known it would take up so much room, I wouldn’t have bought it.
If we hadn’t been so busy, we could have shopped around.
Had we not been so busy, we could have shopped around.
The difference is that here had is in the beginning and the if disappear.
