Lust of the Eyes

Wrong Tactics
In the Garden
Genesis 3:6

“So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.”
In the temptation of Christ
A Study in Failure
Effective Fighting
“When God created humanity, He didn't design us to be blank and passionless. There was a mission to undertake, a mission that required certain drives. In order to live, we must have a drive to eat. In order to be fruitful and multiply, we must have a drive to copulate, in order to subdue the earth, there must be a drive for creativity. That's all perfectly – and I mean, literally, perfectly, human.”
- Russell Moore
The Lust of the Flesh:
Fulfilling desires through illicit means.
The Lust of the Eyes:
Delighting in a gift for us rather than in the Give of all gifts
Matthew 4:8-10

“8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’”
The lust of the flesh is effective when it seeks to fulfill God-given desires in an illicit way.

The lust of the eyes is effective when it overvalues something beautiful and makes it an object of worship.
Right Place but Wrong Heart
Joshua 7:20-21

“20 And Achan answered Joshua, “Truly I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and this is what I did: 21 when I saw among the spoil a beautiful cloak from Shinar, and 200 shekels of silver, and a bar of gold weighing 50 shekels, then I coveted them and took them. And see, they are hidden in the earth inside my tent, with the silver underneath.”
Imagination Unleashed
Dealing with an idolatrous heart
Looking to Scripture
1 Timothy 4:1-4

“1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 2 through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, 3 who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.”
Hebrews 5:14

“But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.”
