U.S.A Expansion
The 20th century brought great changes to America, but trouble loomed. The United States was about to be drawn into age-old fights between longtime enemies from across the Atlantic. The time had come for us to look beyond our own shores and take our place as a world power.
CHINA
JAPAN
Alaska 1867
Hawaii 1900
Isolation: Separated from other countries; not involved.
Expansion: Increasing the size of something.
Yellow Journalism: Exaggerated or untrue news stories
Armistice: Peace agreement between countries.
Rough Riders: A group of fighters during the Spanish American War led by Teddy Roosevelt.
Theodore Roosevelt: Future President who fought in the Spanish American War.
U.S.S. Maine: U.S. ship that exploded in Havana Harbor, Cuba that brought the U.S. into the Spanish American War.
Roosevelt Corollary: Asserted the United State's right to interfere in other nations economic matters and could exercise international police power.
Monroe Doctrine: Stated to Europe that they could not spread their influence to the Western Hemisphere.
Big Stick Diplomacy: Policy taken by President Theodore Roosevelt to describe U.S. dominance of military around the world.
Panama Canal: Canal built between Central and South America to make boat travel faster and easier from the East coast of the U.S. to the West coast.
Activity 1: Mapping U.S. Expansion

Purpose: To fully understand the areas that the U.S. expanded to and what lands were gained after 1850.

Directions:

1st. Label your map U.S. Expansion after 1850

2nd. Create a Map key/Legend at the bottom left hand corner of your map

3rd. Draw dotted lines from the U.S. to the countries the U.S. traded with after 1850

4th. Color the areas that the U.S. gained after 1850
Example: Use three different colors to represent the years the lands were gained (1867=Red)
Reasons for War
On February 15, 1898 the USS Maine exploded and sank, killing 274 men.
Reasons for War
Businesses and trade in Cuba
U.S. supported Cuban Independence effort
Sinking of the U.S.S. Maine
Q: What were the reasons for the U.S. declaring war on Spain?
Results of the War
