Transcript of alkane

H + C Functional group : Alkane Hydrocarbon Properties - Most are insoluble in water - Less dense than water Properties - Alkanes are only made of hydrogen and carbon * They are only single bonded - Has a "-ane" ending Also known as hydrocarbon -Alkanes does not have a functional Information -Alkanes are only identified by containing only carbon and hydrogen Methane -A gas found in nature that is colorless and odorless -Methane is the main component of natural gas - Natural gas also contains several other alkane gasses 75% - Methane
15% - Ethane
5% - other hydrocarbons Methane - Methane is used for heating homes heating water electricity Propane - A colorless and odorless gas - Propane is used for many thing cooking heating homes motor vehicles - like methane propane is flammable Propane - Propane is bottled for our use of fuel Butane - Butane is liquified easily - extremely flammable colorless and odorless - Uses - cigaret lighters - portable stoves Butane - Butane is the fuel for cigarette lighters Hexane - The "hex" in hexane means having six carbon - Is not reactive - Hexane is found in gasoline - Is colorless and in the liquid form Hexane C 3 H 8 C H 4 C 4 H 10 C 6 H 14 Works Cited Butane - Butane is also in aerosol cans BY: Lea Harker Quiz * Simplest Alkane Properties * The homologous series is CnH2n+2 *Remember your geometry class *hydrocarbons produce carbon dioxide and water after combustion * When alkanes react with halogens the product can have more then one name * the boiling point increases as the molecular mass does - Solid , Liquid and gas * In a ring structure the boiling point is higher * need 4 C to make isomers http://www.funtrivia.com/playquiz/quiz2641321e3d8e8.html Works Cited Works Cited Videos References Cyclohexane C4H10 2*4=8 8+2=10 Tridecane.
