Transcript of People want to eternal youth so they can have everlasting be
People want to eternal youth and beauty because it is an important asset to have in society, you have nothing if you don't have beauty.
Why does Dorian want eternal youth?
Dorian desires eternal youth because it means keeping his beauty and in simpler terms as far as society goes, his worth. A quote about youth and beauty's value by Henry elaborates..
Relevence in pop-culture
People today are just as appearance obsessed as there were back in Dorian's time. Some men and woman will go to extreme lengths to achieve what is today, perceived as 'beauty'. The results are not always so pretty.. youth and beauty is also a reoccurring theme in music, the song Young & Beautiful featured in the recent 'Great Gatsby' remake by Lana Del Rey is a prime example.
The history behind man's obsession with youth and beauty
Our fascination with beauty goes back to ancient times rooting in Persia, the fountain of Youth was a legend that claims a the fountain's water could be consumed and keep whoever drinks young and beautiful forever. The most famous explorer to look for this fabled fountain was Ponce De Leon, a Spanish explorer, who set out on March 3rd, 1513. Eventually after stops on Grand Turk Island and San Salvidor, his men landed on the East coast of Florida where Ponce believed he found the fountain. Today, many different fountains and wells in that area of Florida claim to be the real deal.
In the end, Dorian's character grows and he realizes he does, in fact, care about his soul, he misses feeling emotion, and feeling human. He grows so desperate, he eventually is willing to give up his beauty in turn for his soul to be redeemed. In this story, Youth and Beauty is a prominent reoccurring theme and is the root of a lot of turmoil in Dorian's life. If it wasn't so prominent in his society, Dorian's whole predicament could have been avoided.

"..beauty is a form of genius -- is higher, indeed, than genius, as it needs no explanation. It is of the great facts of the world, like sunlight, or spring-time, or the reflection in dark waters of that silver shell we call the moon. It cannot be questioned. It has its divine right of sovereignty. It makes princes of those who have it."
After hearing this, Dorian states to Basil, "I know, now, that when one loses one's good looks, whatever they may be, one loses everything. Your picture has taught me that. Lord Henry Wotton is perfectly right. Youth is the only thing worth having. When I find that I am growing old, I shall kill myself." Further proving that good looks are all that matter to them.
