Joseph Yurga Technology How Nuclear Submarines Function Nuclear submarines are powered through nuclear reactors, similar to those that can be found in nuclear power plants. A nuclear heats water into steam through nuclear fission. Not only does this provide electricity through the steam turbines, it turns the propeller in order for the submarine to move. Nuclear Submarines operate using Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR)
The parts are:
Reactor vessel
Heat exchangers
Steam generator
Pumps and valves
How it works:
The reactor core creates heat
Pressurized water in the primary coolant loop carries heat to a steam generator
Heat from coolant loop is transferred to a second water system in steam generator
The steam generated by this heat is then used to spin a turbine and create energy
The steam is then condensed back into water This is a diagram of the nuclear fission that goes on during the nuclear chain reaction in the reactor. Most reactors use Uranium - 235, and when a neutron collides with it, it creates a large amount of energy. Leftover of lighter elements are a resultant, and several neutrons are now free to collide with more Uranium - 235, continuing the reaction. Where does the heat come from?
Heat is generated when Uranium - 235 is bombarded with neutrons. It then creates a lot of energy and splits into lighter elements. This energy is released in the form of heat. Unique Aspects of Nuclear Submarine Reactors They deliver a lot of power from a very small volume
Run on Uranium-Zirconium or Uranium-Aluminum alloys instead of the UO2 used in commercial reactors
They have long core lives, which minimizes the need to refuel
Compact pressure vessel design while maintaining safety Navy Nuclear Jobs There are several training programs that prepare people to serve a nuclear related role on a submarine. These include the US Navy Nuke school and Maritime Academies. Jobs Onboard Nuclear Subs Are you familiar with the recruiting process at your company? Somewhat and I have participated in several recruiting trips to various universities. Conclusion Technology, Jobs & Transition to Civilian Careers Nuclear Submarines are vessels powered and propelled by nuclear reactors housed inside of the submarine. Do you recruit people from the US Navy Nuclear Submarine Program? We have recruited several people from the US Navy Nuclear Submarine Program. Is there a formal process in place to identify and pursue them as potential employees? I would not say there is a formal process that is different from any recruiting we pursue. The needs are identified and then the Human Resources recruiting team, along with the hiring managers from the department areas, determine how to fill the needs. Sometimes the job needs are posted with several online recruiting websites, and frequently we travel in person to campuses or other forums such as job fairs to recruit prospective candidates. The Navy Nuclear Program is one source that is used. What jobs are these people most suited for? That depends upon what they were doing in the Navy. One predominant area where a lot of navy veterans are successful is in Nuclear Operations, where a reactor operator’s license or a Sr. Reactor Operator (management) license is needed. We have also hired numerous personnel to work in our maintenance departments because of their developed skills in maintaining similar equipment. We also have several former Navy Officers who have senior management positions either in Operations or Engineering. The primary tracts would be Operations (actually operating the reactor and plant supporting equipment) or Engineering (equipment performance monitoring and problem solving and design) How do these recruits typically compare to other employees? Most Navy veterans excel because of their prior nuclear experience before being hired. Is there anything else you’d like to add?
The commercial nuclear power industry is currently experiencing a renaissance with the first new construction in progress in the last 30+ years. It is a good field to enter for people with strong technical backgrounds as there are numerous jobs available to anyone up for the challenge of a fast paced technical environment.
