Transcript of ZIKA VIRUS
Its an RNA virus, member of the Flaviviridae family.
Causes a disease known as Zika fever.
Related to Dengue and Yellow Fever.
It is transmitted by mosquitoes from a species in the genus Aedes.
Less common simtoms:
PCR tests on serum sample.
Specific antibody against ZIKV in serum.
IgM can be detected 3 days after.
ZIKA Virus History
It was first isolated in 1947, from a rhesus monkey in the Zika Forest of Uganda.
From 1951 through 1981, infection was reported from other African countries.
The first outbreak of the disease outside of Africa and Asia was in April 2007, on the Federated States of Micronesia.
First infect dendritic cells near the site of inoculation.
Then the virus spread to lymph nodes and the bloodstream.
The virus can be detected in human blood as early as the day of illness onset.
ZIKA Virus in America
A recent larger outbreak of Zika virus was confirmed in April 2015, in Brasil.
Unknown disease affecting around 500 patients with flu-like symptoms, is now confirmes ZIKA fever.
