This tweaking of the DNA, can be for herbicide and insect resistance, beta-carotene content, higher yield, viral resistance, enhance nutrition, vaccines, and many more. GMOs have always been given a bad reputation, due to the fact that it can cause a lot of problems with the natural, organic organisms that are growing. pros: -Can be made to reduce
pesticides, allowing less of a burden for farmers.
-Better tasting food, because it can be modified to be sweeter.
-vaccine possibilities; bananas are being studied and tested to produce vaccines against viruses like Hepatitis B.
-Some are engineered to enhance the nutrients needed to maintain homeostasis.
-More efficient to grow, farmers can skip steps.
-Fewer animal health problems, allowing the resistance of diseases. Cons: -Environmental risks: Can conclude in cross breeding and cross pollination with the modified crop and the organic crop.
-Collateral Damage: Making plants and animals bacteria resistant, can cause bacteria to become stronger and harder to kill.
-Failure to Yield: Do not save time, and do not save money.
-Since Genetically modified crops are new to the marketplace, there are no long term testing that these products are safe.
-There has been cases of animals dying after eating genetically modified foods, related to those that are consumed by humans.
- Can increase allergic reactions in people, causing them to be more sensitive to their allergies. -The Big Six: Monsanto: -In 1901, John F. Queeny, a purchasing agent for the Meyer Brothers Drug Company, began thinking about moonlighting a business to start manufacturing artificial sweetener, saccharin.(first company to do so, outside of Germany)
- To avoid alienation from suppliers in Germany, Queeny's employer asked him to name the company something other than his last, so he named it after his wife, Olga Monsanto Queeny.
- His motivation: Supply a sweetener that would do the job of sugar, but at 1/6 of the cost.
-The biotechnology field for the company began in 1973, when scientists were successful at transferring genetic material from one organism to another.
-In 1979, their goals were to develop methodology to transfer cloned genes into plant cells and regenerate fertile, healthy plants from those cells. -In January 1983, Monsanto became the first in history, to modify a plant cell through biotechnology.
-A month later, again for the first time in history, Monsanto scientists succeeded in growing whole plants from genetically modified cells.
-In 1987, Monsanto got the "go-ahead" to do field tests of their genetically modified tomatoes.

-2004: following the controversial UK government approval of GE maize for commercial planting, the only company authorized to grow GE maize withdrew its application.
-2004: Bayer conceded to Greenpeace India that all of its projects on genetically engineered crops have discontinued.
-2004: Due to pressure, Monsanto announced that they would suspend further field trials and development of it's GE Roundup Ready wheat.
-2005: Swiss voters voted no in a referendum to determine whether genetically engineered crops and animals can be grown in their country during the next five years.
-2009: Germany becomes sixth European Union country to ban cultivation of Monsanto's GE maize.
-2010: At the European Union commission in Brussels, one million signatures were collected, calling for a suspension of GM crops.

Robert Pham What is the Organic Consumers Organization? -Formed in 1998, in the wake of the mass backlash by organic consumers against the U.S. Department of Agriculture's controversial proposed national regulations for organic food.
-Is an online and grassroots non-profit public interest organization.
-Campaigns for health, justice, and sustainability.
-Deals with: food safety, industrial agriculture, genetic engineering, children's health, corporate accountability, Fair Trade, environmental sustainability, and other key topics. Organic Consumers Association: Believes that:
-GM crops are laboratory-made using technology that is totally different from natural breeding methods. (risk to non-GM crops)
-Can be toxic, allergenic, or less nutritious than their natural counterparts.
-Not adequately regulated to ensure safety.
-Do not increase yield potential.
-Do not reduce pesticide use, but increases it.
-Creates herbicide-tolerant "superweeds", compromised soil quality, and increased disease susceptibility in crops.
-Are energy-hungry, just like any other chemically-farmed crops.
-Cannot solve the problem of world hunger, but actually distracts from its real causes. Organic consumers association Campaigns: -Millions Against Monsanto: Protesting against Monsanto and their GE crops, as well as GMO labeling of their products.

-Organized more than 50 international courses on Biodiversity, Food, Biopiracy, Sustainable Agriculture, Water, Gandhian philosophy, Globalization, IPRs, Business Ethics, Grand Mothers University, etc.
-Converted 200,000 farmers to organic farmering in differnt parts of the country.
-Has trained about 500,00 farmers, conserving 3,000 varieties of rice. Navdanya's GMO free campaign: -Navdanya has led the national and international movement for biosafety and against the dangers of GMOs in agriculture.
-Since 1991, Navdanya has been campaigning against the commercialization of GM crops and food in India and have highlighted the dangerous effects of these crops on our biodiversity, environment, and harmful effects.
-Since 1997, Navdanya has been actively monitoring the GM activities and development in India Freedom from GMOs and conducted field surveys on the performance of Bt. cotton.
-Has joined 740 other international organizations in presenting their opposition against GMOs. -Organic Agriculture: Focuses on the health, ecology, fairness, and care of the farming process. Use local resources and offers opportunities for increasing farmers' income and improving livelihood.
-To feed the world sustainably into the future: We need a thorough and radical overhaul of present international and national agricultural policies.
-Consumers can help by: Buying locally grown, organic foods and urging their Representatives to pass laws that protect our health and eliminate genetic engineering. How did the NON gmo project start? -Started in Berkeley, at the National Grocery Co., a small neighborhood natural grocery store.
-2001: The Big Carrot Natural Food Market in Toronto, Ontario implemented a non-GMO purchasing policy after a year and a half of research. (Discontinuing any product lines that have not confirmed by the manufacturer to be non-GMO).
-2003: In response to letters from concerned customers about a GM soy lecithin that the store was carrying, a group of employees from the Natural Grocery Company initiated the "People Want to Know Campaign"
-This rallied 161 grocery stores and co-ops throughout the United States in a letter-writing campaign to manufacturers of natural food products and supplements in the U.S.
-Goal: Discover GMO status of products, so that the stores' consumers could be offered an informed choice. -2005: The Natural Grocery Company and the Big Carrot Natural Food Market teamed up to form the Non-GMO project.
-Goal: Creating a standardized meaning of non-GMO for the North American food industry. To give the foundation and world-class technical support necessary for this endeavor, the stores began working with the Global ID Group, the world's leaders in non-GMO testing, certification, and consulting.
-2007: Non-GMO project expands its Board of Directors to include representatives of all stakeholder groups in the natural products industry, including consumers, retailers, farmers, and manufacturers. How can you get Involved? -1. Vote with your wallet: When you are shopping, look for the Non-GMO Verified seal on the products you buy.
-2. Donate: The Non-GMO project is a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization, meaning your financial support is tax-deductible, and helps to ensure that they can continue working on providing safe, healthy food choices.
-3. Participate in Non-GMO month: October is Non-GMO month. Retailers can help educate consumers and consumers can ask local retailers to participate.
-4. Encourage your favorite brands to participate: If a brand you love is not verified, let them know about the verification program. (Use your voice to ensure a non-GMO food supply!)
-5. Voice your opinion: Read their blog, and follow them on your favorite social networking sites to keep up-to-date on the latest news on GMOs.
-6. Educate yourself: Learn about the dangers and risks of GMOs as well as learn about the Non-GMO organic brands. What has this project accomplished in 2012? -Over 1,000,000 signatures on Just Label It Petition to FDA: The ongoing effort for mandatory GMO labeling in the U.S has collected more than twice as many signatures as any other food-related petition in the FDA's history. (list of supporters continue to grow.)
-Historic vote on mandatory labeling in CA: In spite of $46 million misinformation campaign by the chemical companies that make GMOs, in November of 2012, nearly half of CA voters still voted in favor of prop 37 for mandatory GMO labeling. (Proposition did not pass, but it raised unprecedented awareness, and 30 other states are now working on mandatory labeling initiatives.
-Peru passees monumental ten-year ban on GE foods.
-Non-GMO product sales surpass $2.4 billion annually: Since it first appeared on products in 2010, the verified seal has become one of the fastest-growing labels in the natural products industry.
-Monsanto Loses to Beekeepers of Yucatan Peninsula: In August 2012, courts ruled in favor of a coalition of 50 beekeepers, environmentalists, and NGOs seeking to block cultivation of GMO soy in eight Mexican states.
-Genetic Roulette Documentary puts spotlight on health risks of GMO: Documentary from author Jeffrey Smith features testimony from healthcare practitioners, scientists, veterinarians, parents, and other health risks of genetically modified foods. (First free showing, the film received more than 1.25 million views.)
-Brazil orders Nestle to label GM products: After analysis showed that the soy in one of Nestle's cookies was more than half GMO, a Brazilian court ordered Nestle to implement labeling on all products containing more than 1% of GMO.
-Third annual Non-GMO Month sees record-breaking participation: During October of 2012, more than 1,500 natural food retailers took part in Non-GMO Month by educating their communities about the GMO issue and celebrating the right to know.
