Television does not increase literacy.
Literacy is the ability to read and write properly. There are many studies linking television and the decline of literacy, not just in the United States, but from all around the world.

Technology and Literacy

Technology has great potential. The amazing reach it has is unmeasurable and extremely impressive. But as commonly stated, it is not about the quantity, it is about the quality. The new generation is having a difficult time distinguishing between the old and the new. Television, texing, Facebook posting, and the Internet are forming a new dialect which most users are now using professionally; one that does not promote proper use of language. In conclusion, technology has NOT contributed to increase in literacy skills, it has only hindered it.
The new language texting has formed, is harming literacy and language as we know it.

Reading is vital in literacy development. Sadly, in recent years reading for pleasure has declined among youths while the use of the internet had risen. Moreover, proper literacy through face-to-face interaction leads to mutual understanding. Improper use of literacy on the internet provides an opportunity for misinterpretation.

The results appear to align. Television does not increase literacy rates, it hinders them.

The language of texting and other electronic forms of communication, is now called by researchers "Written Speech" or "Spoken Writing." This is because it is written as if one were to speak it out loud. This new "netspeak" calls for a new set of literal skills, which means the loss of literacy as we know it.
A New Language
What we are trying to say is that in proper literacy, there are certain expressions such as... ah... watchamacallit... such as... OMG!!! We forgot :-/ ... anyway, expressions that should not be used in writing. (haha)!
Spoken by the Teacher
Some teachers say they have seen Written Speech come up in students' assignments since emails began. Back then, kids would notice the mistakes and fix them as soon as the teacher would comment. Today, students are not noticing the difference. It is safe to say that texts are the abbreviated version of emails and therefore, the same sayings apply.
Social networking has an interesting effect on the English language. Facebook in particular has made a permanent change in the English vocabulary. Unfortunately Facebook's literacy effect is taking its toll on other languages as well.
10 Facebook Terms
that Changed the English Language
Most of the Facebook created terms, are not at all Facebook created. They are simple English words that wrongfully received meaning that is not theirs. Some words were changed so drastically that they are unrecognizable. This is a serious negative change on English grammar and literacy.
1. Friend
(Verb): So nice to meet you! I'll friend you on Facebook later!

2. Like
(Verb): Wow your picture is amazing. I'm gonna like it later.

3. Poke
(Verb): My uncle's 70 year old neighbor keeps poking me.

4. Stalk
(Verb): I keep stalking you. Your pics are amazing.

5. Tag
(Verb): Why does she keep tagging me in pictures I'm not in?
6. Unfriend
(Verb) - I unfriended my uncle's 70 year old neighbor because he kept on poking me.

7. Wall
(Noun) - Check out his wall, his new pics are terrible.


Pro Pic
(Noun) - This one totally has to be your new pro pic.


Facebook Official
(adjective) - You guys should have become Facebook official 3 months ago.

10. Unlike
(Verb) - I accidentally unliked her page so I need to go like it again.
Parent to Teacher Communication
Internet vs face-to-face communication suggests that parents are more likely to communicate through emails and other sources instead of Face-to-Face meetings. Internet can be a negative factor when it comes to physical and mental behavior of a students and that is strongly connected to their overall grades and education experience.
Communication Continues...
While richer methods of communicating once was in determining feelings, attitude, rejection, or simply the meaning and understanding of a discussion through face-to-face, have now become a disconnect of the realistic nature of a discussion. Overall, the internet provides an opportunity for misrepresentation of communicating and the source.

A new book is lovely; an old book can inspire again. With Technology advancing more and more everyday, Books are a thing of the past.

“A survey, conducted by The National Literacy Trust, found that 52 per cent of children preferred to read on an electronic device - including e-readers, computers and smartphones - while only 32 per cent said they would rather read a physical book.” As a result to the exposure of technology, learners have changed.

The Culture Minister continues by saying that "Nowadays kids do not write letters anymore. They forget the correct way to write." Instead they use shortcuts. For example, if someone wants to showcase laughter, one would use ha-ha; but since in Thai the number 5 is called ha, they would simply write 55. No letters used. *****
A 2010 National Thai Survey showed just how much Facebook and other social networks have been harming the Thai language.

The survey has indicated that about
a third of Thai youths do not seem to care about spelling errors, abbreviations and grammar. These mistakes are derived from today's technology, including Facebook.

Thailand's Culture Minister, Nipit Intarasumbut, explained that "Excessive use of Facebook, Twitter and mobile phone messages distorts the language. But we can't stop people from communicating,"

He continued by saying that they have a responsibility to nurture "Official Thai." "We must preserve our national language. If nobody sees its importance, then we're doomed,"*****
Since personal computers were introduced in the 70’s and cellphones in the 80’s many people have been concerned with technology's impact on children's language development. In fact, American Alliance for Childhood published a report arguing that ****"technology is physically, socially, and intellectually detrimental for children. ” For this reason and many others, the above statement is undoubtedly false.
Between 1983 and 2004, a study conducted in NY proved that “***…television was shown to cause academic failure.” In fact, some teachers believe that students no longer notice the difference between “Written Speech” and proper literacy. The technology age is changing languages; English words are being misused and given entirely new meanings, while Thai youths are communicating the Thai language through numbers instead of letters.

Although there is great potential for technology to be beneficial for literacy development, it could only materialize if people would continuously access high language developmental content. Unfortunately, television, texing, Facebook posting, and the Internet, are not promoting proper language use, which leads to the conclusion that technology has NOT contributed to an increase in literacy skills.

In recent decades, reading for pleasure has declined among young people. Reading enhances thinking and engages the imagination in a manner that television and video games do not. "Wiring classrooms for Internet access does not enhance learning.”

People read for different reasons. Whether it is an instruction manual for directions to putting furniture together, or a textbook to study for a college exam.

Critics of reading on the Internet say they see no evidence that increased Web activity improves reading achievement. “What we are losing in this country and presumably around the world is the sustained, focused, linear attention developed by reading,” said Mr. Gioia of the N.E.A. “I would believe people who tell me that the Internet develops reading if I did not see such a universal decline in reading ability and reading comprehension on virtually all tests.”
