Transcript of The Truman Show:

{Appearance, by Nature can be Deceptive}
The director is showing that it is in our human nature to question what aspects of the world around us are real and what is simply a deception.

Truman has no reason to suspect that something unusual is occurring with his reality, but he still searches for answers.
Seahaven is an appearance, but to Truman, it is his reality.

Use of the sea keeps Truman afraid to leave (due to his fear of water)

Seems like the "American Dream" but he still searches for a way out
Cast Members
The Show
Audience tunes into the Truman show to escape their reality
(Human nature also displayed by Truman)
Use of every day objects to record Truman's life>>how would Truman ever suspect that he was under surveillance
Manipulates the events to keep him >> Caused his fear of water by 'killing off' his 'father'
The Truman Show
Nature of Appearance vs. Reality
Searching for the Truth
At the end of the movie, Truman discovers a truth
As he leaves through the door, it shows that he wants to discover the whole truth on his own - set away from Christof's stage (escapes false life for a new, more real one)
"True Man" >> true aspect of the fake world
Stopped short of living as a human
Puppet of his "creator"
Closest person to Truman
Show manipulates this closeness to play with Truman
"...The last thing I would ever do to you..." (Christof feeding line) "... is
to you."
The ultimate best friend
A real relationship between a husband and wife should be full of love, trust and support
Fake, forced love acted by Meryl

In the End Truman faces the decision of submitting to a false reality or venturing out into the real world
Truman eventually chooses the real truth over Christof's fabricated truth
Everyone, even those who Truman trusts, is an actor
Casted to play a role in his life
Scripted and acts for the sake of the show
Show never wants Truman to leave – use methods of control
Travel Agencies promote travel, but in the case of the Truman Show:
Posters of Terrorism and horrible incidents
No upcoming tickets to sell for any destination
Overall message: Stay in Seahaven!
Truman is literally and figuratively at the end of his world
Truman cannot travel farther in his artificial world
Point of where his fake idyllic life ends >> Finally knows the truth
This is proof for Truman that his world is not reality
We've become bored with watching actors give us phony emotions. We are tired of pyrotechnics and special effects. While the world he inhabits is, in some respects, counterfeit, there's nothing fake about Truman himself. No scripts, no cue cards. It isn't always Shakespeare, but it's genuine. It's a life.
Truman's world is a Hollywood creation
Who wouldn't want to live the dream?!
Who makes Truman believe that there is something else out there

Introduces Truman to a concept of reality
Seahaven: A nice place to live
As humans, we are constantly searching for the truth, or for what is REAL. It is in out nature to be wary of deceptions, even when things feel as though they are normal and not out of place.
