Intercultural Competence - is it assessed?
YES, although it is not explicitly stated in the assessment criteria, it is implicitly understood element of message/content/ideas.
Examiners want to see EVIDENCE of the student´s ability to reflect on SIMILARITIES and DIFFERENCES between the culture being studied
and their own.
Assessment OUTLINE
SYLLABUS
CULTURAL COMPARISONS should be done in the ORALS, Paper 2 and Written Assignment.
Paper 1: Receptive Skills
At Sl, the texts tend to increase in difficulty according to the diagram below, so it´s worth teaching the students to divide their time accordingly. This rough guide for timing can be used:



5 minutes reading time: skim read the texts and read through the questions
Text A 10 mins
Text B 20 mins
Text C 30 mins
Text D 10 mins
Checking 1hr and 30 mins
Paper 1 Exam skills
Always copy the exact words from the text. Never paraphrase, never use your own words.

The questions are almost always in order, so refer carefully to the paragraph or line numbers given in the question.
Paper 2: Productive Skills
CRITERIA A LANGUAGE
Vocabulary - related to topic
Structures - verb tenses
CRITERIA B MESSAGE
Ideas - covers all aspect of the question
Development of ideas - organised,
logical and coherent. Supporting
details should be convincing.
CRITERIA C FORMAT
Format - text type
Conventions - style, register, Beginning
and End are IMPORTANT
How to choose questions in Paper 2:
1. What text type is it? - format and conventions
2. Who is the audience? - what register do I need?
3. What topic is the text about? - Do I know enough vocabulary for this topic?
4. What is the communicative purpose of the task? - what is the main verb in the question that says what am meant
to do?
Individual Oral
Sketch out a 4 part plan:
A. Description - 30 seconds, Describe the photo, identify the theme
B. Interpretation - 2 minutes
Develop 2 main points
C. Cultural comparison - 30 seconds
Culture being studied and your own
D. Conclusion - 30 seconds
Solutions, conclusions, reflections
Individual Oral - thinking skills
Describe
Explain - situate the photo
Develop your opinion - thoughts
Analyse - wider social, political etc..
Select - examples or statistics
Compare and contrast - culture
Empathise - understand people
Hypothesis - imagine consequences
Consider other points of view - what experts say about the topic
Criticise - wrong or right
Summarise - express main point
Evaluate - make judgment about
current situation
Written Assignment
If the students do it over several sittings, their work must remain in class between sessions and they MUST NOT choose similar task to anyone else in the group.
Same text type can be chosen but not the same fundamental idea.
ADVANTAGE of One Sitting
If they do it in one sitting, they will not be able to discuss their idea with anyone else, so the teacher
will not be worried in choosing a very similar
task to someone else. It is therefore
recommended to do it in one sitting.
