If we don't do them, there is usually formal punishment.
"Unwritten" rules of society and human interaction.

Define what is "normal" and "acceptable."

Breaking a "norm" has subtler consequences (people avoid you, people ostracize you, people judge you, doors of opportunity start to close).

Students rely on themselves and each other, not the teacher
We work to help others understand
Civil disagreement is encouraged
Ideas are supported by text evidence
Listeners show that they are listening
