MADD - Mothers Against Drunk Driving What is this organization? Where was this organization founded? Who founded this organization? MADD is a non-profit organization... that focuses on drunk driving. After her 13 year old daughter was killed by a drunk driver.... Candy Lightner founded MADD in 1980. MADD is based in the US... but has branches in Canada and other countries. What are the contributing factors to the cause of the problem? Drunk drivers often kill innocent pedestrians.... because reaction time is slower. Is MADD effective? MADD would like to have it become mandatory.... for convicted drunk drivers to use an.... alchohol ignition interlock. The convicted driver would have to blow into the device (which is about the size of a cellphone) to measure alchohol levels. If the test proves positive for alchohol...... then the horn will honk and the lights will flash.... attracting attention and police. There are also random periods of testing.... so the driver can't have a sober buddy take the test. The car will not start if the driver doesn't take his/her test. SO WHAT?
Neither of us has ever been affected by drunk driving... either in our own families or someone we know. As for doing something about the problem... for now, neither of us can drink or drive, so it does not seem to be a very big problem for us. We do not plan to do anything about the problem in the near future... but as we get older we may become more interested in it... and decide to join the cause. We were either going to choose MADD or Operation Smile..... but after researching Operation Smile the children sort of frightened us. Also, we felt MADD could affect us more. What would the world be like without MADD? Without MADD of course, there would more fatalities... but also, more young teens would want to just "try it out", thinking it was cool or something.... Because MADD would not be there to show the reality of drunk driving. Teens may be far less responsible, and far more responsible for the death or injury of an innocent human being. Life is never fair, but there are some things you can do to make it more fair. Picture it.... One decision could affect the lives of many others... For example - Candy Lightner founds MADD... and many lives are saved because awareness is raised.... Here are some tips on how to get home safely... (for those who can drive...) call a cab
take the bus
have a trusted friend or family member drive you We hope you have learned NOT to drink and drive when you're older. Why did we choose this organization?
