The Desert Biome
~30 degrees latitude north and 30 degrees latitude south
~Most found away from the coasts, where moisture from the oceans rarely reaches
~cover about one fifth of our planet
~Extremely low rainfall
~Extreme heat and dryness
~Average temperature is 100 degrees during the day and below 50 degrees at night
~ Wettest desert does not get more than 10 inches of rain a year
~ Camels are able to store a lot of water in their humps
~ Rattlesnakes and scorpions spend most of the day underground, then come out at night
~Spade foot toads spend 9 months of the year underground
~Saguaro Cactus: Has a large set of underground roots to collect water after rain
~Barrel Cactus allows it to expand when it rains and store water in its spongy tissue
~Dragon Tree: has a sap that hardens to a dark red (sap is used to make jewelry)
