Increasing of Population
Extreme Primate City
From the population census in 2010, the number of Bangkok population living in high-rise housing was 160,000 (0.02%).
There are approximately more than 94,000 units of high-rise housing (ready to move-in)available in the market by the end of 2015.
Global meaning of housing
declared by the United Nations(UN) and World Health Organization (WHO)
To achieve best practice in housing policy, we should consider that housing is more than shelter, housing should ensure
personal/ household privacy, safety and security,
allow occupants to live without fear of intrusion.
Well-designed housing,
accessible housing, adequate community services are the very important basic needs
for the disadvantaged people and communities.
Meaning of housing
compared to
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs compared to housing's capability [drawn by Siriwan Rujibhong, 2015]
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
High-rise residential building has a unique characteristic and some limitations which are influencing sense of housing of its dwellers in some ways. This needs to be examined and pointed out.
Uniqueness of High-rise Environment
+
Bangkok Urban Context
Physical environment comprised of urban context and architectural features of housing along with the personal attributes and experience fostered by social mechanism have major influences towards the individuals’ psychological sense of house domains:
1) safety concern, 2) privacy

satisfaction,
and
3) sense of community
.

Research Hypothesis

In this research, safety concern means a level of feeling worried about being harmed by high-rise building’s threats, which are 1) crimes, 2) emergencies, and 3) behavioural disorder.
Privacy is controlling over transaction between person and others. The ultimate aim is to enhance autonomy and/or to minimize vulnerability. In this research, there will be 1) level of privacy needs as a personality factor, and 2) privacy satisfaction in context of high-rise housing environment.
Sense of community refers to sense of individual engaged their community in the form of membership, influence, reinforcement, and shared emotional connection.

The multi-stage sampling technique will be applied and conducted in 6 geographically clustered zones of Bangkok urban area; Inner city (East and West sides), Fringe of city (East and West sides), and Outer city (East and West sides).
Then 3 residential high-rise buildings, each representing economical clusters of high/middle/low selling price respectively will be purposely selected from each zone. The participants under study will be 1,200 high-rise residents living in each building.

1) Physical Environement Assessment + Observation
2) Questionnaire
3) In-depth Interview selected repondents (if necessary)

1) To examine the mental status of high-rise dwellers in 6 different urban areas of Bangkok. The 3 psychological domains are 1) safety concern, 2) privacy satisfaction, and 3) sense of community.

2) To analyze the significant influence of 2 important moderators, which are 1) personal factor, and 2) environmental factor (urban context and architectural features) towards those 3 dependent variables in order to synthesize and provide an explanation, cause and effect of the results retrieved from field survey.

3) To define the pattern and/or interrelationship between these 3 environmental-psychological domains and finally lead to constructing a new effective mental well-being index generalized for high-rise housing in urban context of Bangkok.
UNIT OF MEASUREMENT

Research Objectives

To well analyze the pattern and the relationships between variables, all collected data will be examined with both descriptive statistics and inferential statistics will be brought up to establish a relational structure model of the core variables.

Added Value of Research
The results of this research will reflect the hidden mental status of the dwellers and also lead to the infirmity of the existent environmental design especially residential high-rise in order to propose an overall viewpoint for creating the better vertical housing environment and to develop a new effective mental well-being index and indicators for high-rise residents in urban context of Bangkok eventually.
