Transcript of Punnett Squares and Pedigrees

Punnett Squares
Punnett squares
- a graphic used to predict the possible genotypes of offspring in a given cross.
Uses of Punnett Squares
- the mathematical chance of a specific outcome in relation to the total number of possible outcomes.

- an expression that compares two quantities.

Probability can be expressed as a ratio or a percentage.

- a tool used to study the patterns of inheritance across multiple generations.

They are useful tracing sex-linked disorders such as hemophilia, cystic fibrosis or colorblindness.

- someone who has the allele for a recessive disease but does not have the disease. By identifying if both mother and father have the recessive allele doctors can predict the likelihood of the offspring getting the disease.
