Transcript of Ireland's food habits and traditions

Food history in Ireland In 1169 the arrived affecting diet and farmimg. Wheat, peas, and beans became staple foods and food customs were starting to differ.
People begun to cook more complex dishes, and french and italian cooking customs started to influence the cooking of the upper-class.
Into the 1500's the potato was introduced, and after barley 200 years it had replaced
some of the older staple foods such as dairy and oats. The potato then became the mainstay of the irish diet. Then came the irish potato famine in the 1840's.Most farmers grew one certain type of potato, which was highly prone to disease. In 1845-47 this wound up
destroying 2/3 of Ireland's potato crops, and caused over 1 million people to die, and 2 million to emigrate. But once the famine was over the potato was back to being the staple food in the irish diet. So then the farmers started to spray their crops with chemicals to protect from diseases, and as of 2001 the Irish eat more potato's than most other countries in the world.
