These paragraphs would be organized like so:
Body Paragraph no.1: LYRICS

Supporting Detail 2: NOFX
Body Paragraph no. 2: MELODY
Supporting Detail no. 1: Billie Holiday

The Paragon's "The Tide is High"
Blondie's "The Tide is High"
BLOCK METHOD
defined as organizing body paragraphs by SUBJECT.
ALTERNATING METHOD:
BLOCK METHOD:
For example, if I were CONTRASTING The Paragons against Blondie's version of "The Tide is High"...
my major points could be: INSTRUMENTS IMPLEMENTED, SENTIMENT OF LYRICS and MOOD OF MUSIC.
These paragraphs would be organized like so:
Body Paragraph no. 1: THE PARAGONS
Supporting Detail no. 1: Instruments Implemented
Supporting Detail no. 2: Sentiment of Lyrics
Supporting Detail no. 3: Mood of Music
Body Paragraph no. 2: BLONDIE
Supporting Detail no. 1: Instruments Implemented
Supporting Detail no. 2: Sentiment of Lyrics
Supporting Detail no. 3: Mood of Music
BUT KEEP IN MIND:
IF YOU'RE MAKING AN ARGUMENT THAT ONE IS BETTER THAN THE OTHER, ALWAYS PUT THE SUBJECT YOU BELIEVE IS SUPERIOR IN THE FINAL PARAGRAPH (FOR BLOCK) OR THE FINAL SUPPORTING DETAIL (FOR ALTERNATING).
And one final difference is in the
INTRODUCTION
.
If your essay is going to be focused on CONTRASTS, then in the "background/history" section, you must note COMPARISONS.
For example,
If I want to write a PERSUASIVE essay, saying that Blondie's version of "The Tide is High" is better than The Paragon's version,
and I want to use ALTERNATING METHOD...
Hook:
Seeks to get audience attention (audience will most likely be people interested in music / teenagers / young adults.
Background / History:
Introduce The Paragons and Blondie; introduce "The Tide is High"; discuss the SIMILARITIES between the two versions.
