How to remedy?
1.) Privatize the Commons (“free market environmentalism”)

Let individuals "own" environment
The Tragedy of the Commons
Ideology – Environmentalism
Environmental movement :

Varying success in affecting party policies

Varying success in affecting policies of states in relation to other states

Green political parties (generally viewed as “left-leaning” parties, some exceptions)
Environmentalism and Politics
Related to Deep Ecology

Case rests mainly on the intrinsic importance of wilderness, whether or not humans use it
i.e. saving rain forests
Wilderness Preservation:
3.) Humans have no right to reduce this richness and diversity except to satisfy “vital needs”.

4.) flourishing of human life is compatible with decrease in human population. Non-human life requires this decrease.
Deep Ecology
“Ecocentric”: the entire natural order, not human happiness, as highest value

Distinct difference from liberalism: individual person is not focus
3.) Deep Ecology
“development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
Sustainable Development
How to remedy?

2.) Set up a regulatory regime (government or organizations)
The Tragedy of the Commons
Addresses the value of environment to human health and happiness

Focus remains upon human welfare (like conservationism), but broader in scope (less economic, more postmaterialist)

Both Conservationism and HWE:

“Anthropocentric” - human-centred
Like feminism:

Not necessarily “left” or “right”

Historical roots much older than modern movement
Environmentalism
Related to Deep Ecology

Proposes to ban hunting, raising of domestic livestock for food and other economic purposes, and use of animals in laboratory experiments
Animal Liberation
Principles (1 and 4, rest on p.200)

1.) Human and non-human life both have value in themselves - independent of human purposes

4.) flourishing of human life is compatible with decrease in human population. Non-human life requires this decrease.
Deep Ecology
Recall from Chapter 8

The Tragedy of the Commons
The attempt to manage natural resources so that human users, including future generations, derive maximum benefit over a long period of time

Based on human use -- prudent use of resources, primarily economic
1.) Conservationism
