Transcript of Friedrich Froebel
At the tender age of one,
Friedrich' s mother passed away. He was left to the care of his father who never seemed to have time for him.
As a small child, Friedrich lacked the time, attention, and love that is often needed for one to adequately grow and thrive (Biography of Friedrich Froebel, 2014).

The Educational Contributions of Friedrich Froebel
The First Kindergarten

"In 1837 Friedrich Froebel founded his own school and called it "kindergarten," or the children's garden" (Pioneers in the Field, 2014).
A long strip of land became an essential part of the Kindergarten where the children planted and nurtured flowers, fruit and vegetables (Friedrich Froebel Time Line, 2014).

Froebel passed away in 1852 (Friedrich Froebel Time Line, 2014).
The Biography of Friedrich Froebel
The Father of Kindergarten
Friedrich Froebel was the son a of a Lutheran minister, who was deeply wrought by his religious upbringing and his experiences as a child.
In 1792, Froebel went to live with his uncle as a result of an unfavorable relationship with his dad and step-mother.
Froebel worked as a forester’s apprentice. It was during this time that he learned how to observe, describe, draw, and investigate and to make decisions.
Froebel’s work as a forester’s apprentice and a mineralogist led him to gain a deeper appreciation of nature; and through nature, Friedrich developed a profound awareness and understanding of God and religion (Provenzo, 2009).
Froebel believed that nature played a colossal role in how children learn, and that education should begin shortly after a child is born.
Froebel was fascinated with the likes and writings of Friedrich von Schelling’s 1802 Bruno, or The Natural and the Divine Principle of Things, which further deepened his understanding of nature and his interconnection to and of all things.
Froebel also believed in the nature and spiritual capacity of the child, thus creating his theory of play: that children have an innate need for play. Froebel’s theory of play states that all children should be actively engaged and involved in meaningful play (Provenzo, 2009) &(Pulliam, 2013).
Froebel used his own childhood experiences, education, work experiences, connections with nature and the works of Johann Gottlieb Fichte, Swiss educator Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, and Friedrich von Schelling to fashion the first Kindergarten (Provenzo, 2009) . Based on the teaching of Pestalozzi, Froebel accepted his first teaching position at Frankfurt Model School where he applied his hands on learning approach (Pioneers in the Field, 2014).
Froebel's theory of play and the emergence of kindergarten continue to have a profound effect on education today. Research continues to reveal that children who attend quality kindergartens are more likely to go on to college and become productive citizens. A study conducted as recent as 2011 revealed that skills taught in kindergarten; the same skills that Froebel believed in, are lifelong skills that teach children valuable lessons in becoming productive and respectful adults.
As a former kindergarten teacher, I continuously witnessed the growth and development of many kindergarten students as they learned the world around them through play. For many students, kindergarten is their first educational and social setting. They quickly learn the world around them by interacting with others and being exposed to various physical and social experiences that they may not otherwise be exposed to (The Importance of Kindergarten, 2014).
