Solving Equations
Starter
I think of a number. I times it by 4 and add 1.
The answer is the same as if I had times it by 2 and add 5.

What number was I thinking of?

Can you do this without trial and improvement?
Equations
I think of a number. I times it by 4 and add 1.
The answer is the same as if I had times it by 2 and add 5.

What number was I thinking of?
Three types
Simple: 6x - 4 = 1

Brackets: 6(x - 4) = 1

Unknowns
on both
sides
L.O. - To solve any linear equation (Level 5/6).
4x + 1 = 2x + 5
: 6(x - 4) = 4x - 6
Examples
7x - 2 = 19

7(x - 2) = 19

7(x - 2) = 7 - 2x
Main Activity
Red: Mixed equations to solve (3 first type, 3
second type, 3 third type)

Amber: More complicated equations.

Green: Form and solve equations.
Red:
q = -1 x = 4 x = 5
a = 4 x = 10 x = 7
e = -20 p = -3 x = 1

Amber
x = 1
x = 1
x = -1/2
x = 5 3/4
x = 1 1/10
x = 2 3/4
Green
10p + 6 = 6p + 22
p = 4 so perimeter = 46
First bed = 9 by 14.
Second bed = 11 by 12

y=-1/2 so length = 5.

x = 20 gives angles of 55, 55, 70.
