UNITS OF MEASUREMENT
In the past, people used part of human body such as hands, arms, fingers and legs as the units of measurement for length. For example, two arms were called as one
. People also used
as units of measurement for weight, in the past.
A standard system of units known as Imperial System was introduced in England on 13th century. Under this system, length is measured in mile, chain, yard (yd), foot (ft) and inch (in).
For mass, under the Imperial System it was measured in pound (lb) and ounce (oz).
Under this system, length is measured in metre (m) and mass is measured in kilogram (kg).
THE ADVANTAGES OF USING DIFFERENT UNITS OF MEASUREMENT
Many of measurement are easier to calculate and use with.
Better accuracy for what is being measured.
Magnitude more understandable.
THE DISADVANTAGES OF USING DIFFERENT UNITS OF MEASUREMENT
It can cause confusion because some people might not be familiar with it.
Cause misunderstanding if not labelled.
Wasted in time when comparing other units.
Unit of measurement is a definite magnitude of a physical quantity, defined and adopted by convention or by law, that is used as a standard for measurement of the same physical quantity.
Different systems of units used to be very common. Now there is a global standard, the International System of Units (SI), the modern form of the metric system.
PROBLEM CAUSED BY NOT USING STANDARD UNIT
Measurement would not have any meaning because it is restricted to certain areas.
Communication when buying things would be difficult.
