The Western Church
The Western church became what we know today as the Roman Catholic Church.
The East-West schism was a split between two parts of the Roman Empire which changed peoples views of cultural and political things.
The East-West Schism has not ended but the pope hopes to have unity with the Eastern Orthodox Church.
East-West Schism
Cultural differences were growing between the Eastern and Western parts of the Roman Empire in 1054.
The Eastern Church
The Eastern Churches do not accept the pope's rulings or leadership. They are now known as the Eastern Orthodox Churches.
Differences Between the Eastern and Western Chuches
This caused a schism between the Eastern and Western beliefs and churches in the Roman Empire. A schism is a is a division or split. This is known as the East-West Schism or the Great Schism.
The Western Church decided to stay under the ruling of the pope, unlike the Eastern Church.
Each Eastern Church follows its own ancient tradition, liturgical customs, and language.
The Catholic Church today has 22 Churches
It consists of 21 Eastern Orthodox Churches and the Roman Catholic Church
Before the schism the Church used to believe in the same moral code or sacraments but the Eastern Orthodox Church changed and no longer has the same requirements as the Roman Catholic Church.

Differences Between the Churches
The Roman Catholic Church believes in having a pope and the Eastern Orthodox Church does not, which is the biggest difference between the Churches.
Another difference between the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church is the language. The Catholic Church services are in Latin while the Eastern Orthodox Churches services are in native languages.
The Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church have different beliefs about original sin.
The Eastern Orthodox believes that Mary was cleansed of original sin and the Roman Catholic Church believes that Mary was born without original sin.
