DAILY FIVE in ROOM FIVE
Transcript of DAILY FIVE in ROOM FIVE
First of all, The Daily 5 will become a big part of your day.
It will allow you to do meaningful work independently.
It also encourages Trust, Choice, Urgency, Independence, and Stamina
What is Daily 5?
The best thing about Daily 5 is that eventually, you get to choose what you do at a given time.
If you don't feel like reading to yourself, you can choose to work on your writing
If you don't feel like Writing, then you can choose to do some reading.
You can choose what you focus on in Writing, or what you focus on in Reading.
Purpose + Choice= MOTIVATION!
that will motivate you and put you in charge of your own learning!
There is a reason “why” you do certain tasks, and you will be taught “why” you do things. An example of “why” is something like this. “Why do we read?” Well… research says that reading each day is the best way to become a better reader- it’s as simple as that!
In terms of The Daily 5, meaningful learning will require mutual trust and respect between the teacher and you, the student.
It is trust that will allow the teacher to focus energy on teaching, not managing behaviors.
I trust you to make the right choices, to work on task, to follow our expectations on your own.
You trust me that this will work, that it helps you with your learning, and that I can teach how to read and write through the Daily 5.
READING & WRITING
WELCOME TO DAILY 5
READ TO SOMEONE
LISTEN TO READING
WORK ON WRITING
Don't let ANYONE get in the way of you and your learning.
Not your enemy. Not your friend. Not a classmate. Not your teacher. Not your principal.
What is independence?
How do you think it relates to Daily 5?
Everyone stand up!
You're going to stand with your feet at a shoulder-width apart and then bend down so you are sitting down in thin air.
Then put your arms out in front of you.
What does this have to do with Daily 5?
BUILDING MUSCLE MEMORY
Don’t be surprised if we go over and over and over some of the expectations for the components of The Daily 5.
The reason we do this is to train your muscles to do the right thing.
To be successful, we’ll follow 10 steps to muscle memory…
If you don’t have the stamina to read for thirty minutes, you will not be successful. In fact, you may even become frustrated and lose motivation to succeed.
TEN STEPS TO MUSCLES!
1. Identify what is to be taught.
2. Set a purpose and a sense of urgency
3. Brainstorm behaviors using “I” chart.
4. Model the most desirable behaviors.
5. Model the least desirable behaviors.
6. Everyone model and build stamina
7. Independent work
(teacher stays out of the way).
8. Quiet signal to come back to group.
9. Group check-in (How did you do?).
10. Repeat steps 1-9.
LET'S DO THIS!
Let's do some Reading to Self!
What behaviours do you think
will need to do to be able to Read to Self?
What will this allow the
to do to teach?
