Annie and the terrible, no good, very bad week
BY: Maia scott and erin dennis
Dedicated to Ms. Breinig for teaching us how to use positive reinforcement!
Annie is a two year old girl with bright red hair and is three feet tall. She likes to make her own decisions, isn't very good at sharing, gets upset easily, and doesn't clean up after herself. For her, this is going to be a very tough week.
Write the primary idea of the mind map in the center. Use different color notes to differentiate between topics. Use lines and arrows to create branches that connect ideas to each other.
Annie goes to preschool and while she is playing with Mark, she grabs the truck that he is playing with. It is a terrible, no good, very bad week.
Monday:
Today Annie took a toy truck away from another classmate while he was still playing with it. The teacher asked her to share the toy with Mark and if she refused to do so her card would be flipped to yellow and the toy would be taken away. Annie grabbed the toy away again so Annie's card was changed to yellow and she was not allowed to play with the toy.
Positive Guidance Response:
Tuesday:
When Annie gets home on Tuesday her mom gives her coloring books and crayons to play with. As she starts coloring she discovers that crayons break and proceeds to break each crayon in the box in half. It is a terrible, no good, very bad week.
Positive Guidance Response:
Annie's mom saw all the broken crayons and explained to Annie that crayons aren't meant to be broken. She then grabs a non-broken crayon and shows Annie how to use it properly. Annie agrees with her mother but then when her mom leaves the room Annie continues to break crayons.
Wednesday:
Annie is really mad on Wednesday because her week is rotten. She goes to a new babysitter's house and just sits in the corner and refuses to play with anyone else. It is a terrible, no good, very bad week.
Positive Guidance Response
The babysitter went over to talk to Annie to try to get her to play with her. The baby sitter showed Annie all the fun things they could do, such as play dolls. Annie refused to play and continued to sulk in the corner.
Thursday:
After snack time on Thursday, Annie decides that she doesn't want to help with clean up. It is a terrible, no good, very bad week.
Positive Guidance rESPONSE
The teacher approached Annie and offered to help her clean up. Annie went over to help and spilled her chocolate milk. She got frustrated as the teacher tried to tell her to clean that up too. Annie sat down and cried in frustration.
Friday:
On Friday night, Annie's mom decides to read her a story. Although it was interesting at the beginning, she refuses to sit still at the end. It is a terrible, no good, very bad week.
Positive Guidance Response
Annie's mom tells Annie that she needs to pay attention to find out what happens in the end. If she continues to not listen she will have to go to bed. Annie continues to not listen and tells her mom that the story is boring so her mom puts Annie to bed.
Saturday:
On Saturday Annie plays marbles with her dad. He asks her several times to only take one at a time, but Annie insists on playing with all of them. It is a terrible, no good, very bad week.
Positive Guidance Response
Annie's dad warned Annie that if she continued to not share the marbles they wouldn't be able to play with them anymore. Annie got mad that he threatened to take them away so she stormed off to her room crying.
Sunday:
On Sunday Annie has her cousins over. When they don't do what she wants, she becomes easily angered. She stomps her feet, yells loudly, and hits. It is a terrible, no good, very bad week.
Positive Guidance Response
Annie's mom pulls Annie aside and tells her that she needs to include everyone's ideas and not hit. If she continues to be naughty she will be put in timeout. Annie gets in a argument with her cousin and hits him. Annie's mom sees and puts her in timeout.
Conclusion:
Annie's mom sends her to sleep and explains that some weeks are just like that. She tells Annie that she is a very smart girl but she needs to learn to behave properly so she can have good weeks. These rough weeks will only make her stronger in the end teach her lessons. Annie finally agrees with her mom and falls asleep.
