A reference book containing an alphabetical list of words, with information given for each word, usually including meaning and pronunciation.
Types of Specialized Dictionaries


Biographical Dictionary
Geographical Dictionary
Foreign Language Dictionary
Sports Dictionary
Music Dictionary
and many more!
Biographical dictionaries
are used to find information about famous people
they usually contain brief facts about the person’s life such as: birth date, major accomplishments, and events that have made the person famous
Geographical Dictionaries
contain basic information about places such as location, population, and famous landmarks.
may contain a few maps
useful for finding out the pronunciation and basic location of geographical locations.
2. What is a Thesaurus
?

A book of synonyms, often including related and contrasting words and antonyms

A
Thesaurus
is used to find words that mean the same or opposite as another word.

They are simple to use - just look up your word and a thesaurus will give you the list of synonyms and antonyms for that word.
3. What is an Encyclopedia
?

A comprehensive reference work containing articles on a wide range of subjects or on numerous aspects of a particular field, usually arranged alphabetically.

is used to find information about a person, place, or thing.
An
Atlas
is a book of maps.

Atlases
are used to find specific locations such as: country, state, city or geographic formation.
5. What is an Almanac
?

An
Almanac
is a book of facts that provide brief, useful and interesting information relating to countries of the world, sports, entertainment, etc.

They are updated every year so they always contain the most current information available.
The next few slides describes different situations. You must decide what type of reference material would be the BEST and FASTEST way to find the information.

General atlases
contain maps showing the physical and political features of individual countries or groups of countries throughout the world.
may contain maps on a wide variety of topics such as climate, population, economic activities, and environment.


Subject atlases
are about a specific area of study such as
•astronomical maps or photographs of stars.
•geographical maps showing changes or activities over time, such as borders, military campaigns, exploration, and cultural differences.
•topographic maps showing the physical terrain of an area.


Road atlases
contain maps that show major highways and secondary roads for geographical areas.

The PLM University Library seeks to maintain an atmosphere that is comfortable and welcoming for all library users and one which permits users to make proper use of library resources.

The Library expects its readers to observe rules of conduct:
Speak in moderate tone of voice;
Eating, drinking and smoking in the library are not allowed. (Library users may have water bottles)
REFERRAL LETTER

Students and faculty who wants to avail the library services of other institutions must request for a referral letter from authorized library personnel a day before.
LIBRARY CLEARANCE
A student, faculty or employee must be cleared of accountability upon graduation, study leave, transfer, leave of absence, resignation and retirement.
LOSSES

Library Card
- A lost library card should be reported immediately to the library. Should the owner fail to do so, he/she shall be responsible for any loss incurred through the use of his/her library card by any unauthorized person.

Book
- Book/s not returned seven (7) days after due date is considered lost. It may be replaced with the same or later edition. Replace it within thirty (30) days with another title but of the same subject or better of later edition.
Renewal of Loan
- Book/s on loan can be renewed personally for another day unless needed. Request for renewal shall be made by the borrower in person. Request made thru a representative he/she must present a letter of authority together with a valid ID of the representative and the borrower.
LOAN OF BOOK

Circulation Book
- Two (2) books may be borrowed at a time for OVERNIGHT USE ONLY and must be returned on or before 9:00 a.m. the following day.

Reserved Book
- Only one (1) book can be checked out at a time for PHOTOCOPYING purpose only.
The University Library uses the
Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC)
and the
Library of Congress Classification (LCC).
The Circulation, Filipiniana and the Graduate Library uses the DDC. while the Health Science,Law, Medical Library, and the PLM-OM Library uses the LCCS.
Each book/material in the collection has been assigned a particular no. which appear in the upper left hand corner of the catalog card called the CALL NO.
SAMPLE ENTRY:
Author Card
– the basic card which is also called the Main card.
The author’s name appears on the 1st line of the card.

Title Card
- the title is typed in the 1st line of the card above the author’s name.

Subject Card
– describes what the book is all about & is typed in the 1st line of the card all in capital letters.
Types of Card Catalog:


Divided Catalog
- It is divided for convenience in use into two or more units.

Dictionary Catalog
– All the entries (author, title, subject, series) and their related references are arranged together in one general alphabet.
There are three ways to locate a book/ material in the card catalog:

Author
Title
Subject
Each card contains the complete bibliographic data/information such as the complete title of the book, the author, edition, illustrator, the imprint (place of publication, publisher and date of publication), physical description, number of pages, illustrations, size, colored, etc.
Card Catalog
is the index to the collection/resources of the library. It points out the location of the book and other types of materials by giving the call number, and it lists in one place or entry in alphabetical order all books/materials by a particular author or subject.

1. Library cards are issued within the first month of each semester and the first two weeks of each summer term(s).
Requirement in securing a library card are as follows:

Current registration card;
One 1x1 recent colored ID photo.
2. Library privileges shall be granted only to students with library cards duly signed by the Chief Librarian for the current semester.
3. Students are strictly prohibited from lending their cards or using other student’s library cards.

The University Library was named after Celso Al Carunungan, a notable writer, historian and former member of the PLM Board of Regent.

Periodicals
- Any person who loses or fails to return a periodical after recall shall:
Replace it with the same title and issue number;
Replace it with a copy that approximates the original within sixty (60) days or pay a fine equivalent to fifty percent (50 %) of the cost of the periodical.
FINES
The fines imposed on overdue book/s are as follows:
Circulation Book - Php 5.00 per day including Sundays and holidays.
Reserved Book (Overnight Book):
Php 2.00 for the first hour after the cut-off (9:00 a.m.);
Php 5.00 for each hour after the first;
Php 50.00 for each full day.
DDC is divided in 10 major fields/classes.
