Synopsis of Down A Dark Hall
Personal Connection
Quote from Down a Dark Hall
Kit's mom and step-dad are leaving for their honeymoon as they drop her off at her new boarding school. Tucked away in the far country of New York, Kit is leery of what her school year might be like. Blackwood School for Girls, an abandoned mansion, has been recently renovated over the summer. To Kit's surprise, only four girls where accepted to attend the exclusive boarding school. As the school year goes by, strange things start to happen. Lights flicker on and off. Shadows of what seem like ghosts follow the girls around. Kit starts writing and playing music she had never been capable of playing. Madame Duret, the schools head professor, acts very tense around the girls. The girls eventually catch onto her plan. All four girls figure out they have a special ability to connect with the dead; a sixth sense. Famous composers, artists, and writers use the 'gifted' children' to continue their careers through them. Shocked and scared, the girls look for any way to escape this school of torture.
Being the child of two famous magazine photographers, Lois grew up knowing she wanted to be a writer. Duncan has written over 50 books, known best for her young adult suspense novels. Several of her books have become movies such as "Hotel for Dogs" & "I Know What You Did Last Summer". Lois has a husband and has three grown children. They lost one child due to an unsolved murder.
My personal connection with this book is that Kit and I have much of the same attitude and approach to things. Kit takes control of situations and always plans things out; so do I. Kit isn't afraid to take a leap into the unknown for something she believes in. I am not afraid to stand up for what I feel is wrong or right. Although I may not have a sixth sense, and can connect with the dead, Kit and I share many things in common.
"'By Christmas,' she said softly,'it won't be any longer. We won't have to be at Blackwood for them to get through us. They're digging in deeper every day. By Christmas, they'll be part of us, the spirit people. They'll have such control that no matter where we go, no matter what we do for the rest of our lives,we'll belong to them,'" (Duncan, 139).
Conclusion
Will Kit and her friends make it out of Blackwood alive, before the process of connecting the dead with them is complete? What future will lie ahead of the girls? Read Down a Dark Hall, a page turning suspense, horror novel to find out what will happen to Kit and the other four girls.
