1.1 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
- What is the importance of the English language and the important of the correct use of fields such as phonetics, linguistics, reading and all communicative competence .
- The principal factors to know grammar rules and how can you identiffy grammar errors as it is very important to know in students of 3° year of bachelor degree In English in UNIVO
Why studied this important process of learning academical English?
The research is to be of help to the teaching and students by addressing a most common situation presently and the students acquired the ability to pass the TOELF test. And they developing grammar competence.
It flourished in the 1970's and 1980's as one of the first ways to investigate L2 acquisition but then declined in popularity. However, recently it has made a comeback in a more specific way. Error analysis gives language teachers and learners the strategies to overcome or minimize their disabilities and the disabling effect of their ignorance.
WHAT IS THE COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK (CEF OR CEFR)?
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is a description of language ability. It provides a common basis for the elaboration of language syllabuses, curriculum guidelines, examinations, textbooks, etc. across Europe. It describes in a comprehensive way what language learners have to learn to do in order to use a language for communication and what knowledge and skills they have to develop so as to be able to act effectively.

It is the ability to recognize and produce the distinctive grammatical structures of a language and to use them effectively in communication.

1.4.1 OVERALL OBJECTIVE:
Develop error analysis approach to assess grammar competence from third year students of bachelor’s degree in English of first semester at Universidad de Oriente Univo
1.4.2 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
-Detect which are the common grammatical errors in third year students of bachelor’s degree in English.
Apply a series of grammar placement test to improve student’s ability to identify grammatical errors.
Determine if the students are in the level of grammatical competence required, based on C.E.F.R.
1.5.1 OVERALL HYPOTHESIS
The use of error analysis approach allows measuring the level of grammar competence on students of third year of bachelor’s degree in English.
The students from third year of bachelor’s degree in English have common grammatical problems to identify grammatical errors.
By applying grammar placement test, students from third year of bachelor’s degree in English show their abilities to identify grammatical errors in sentences.
The students from third year of bachelor’s degree in English are in the level of grammatical competence required for their academic level, based on C.E.F.R.
Descriptive research is often used to describe characteristic from a population or phenomenon under study.
Descriptive research is also known as statistical research. The main goal of this type of research is to describe the data and characteristics about what is being studied. The idea behind this type of research is to study frequencies, averages, and other statistical calculations.
COMBINATION OF THE QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE METHODS
For this the need to use both methods in order to obtain and show more accurate information which support the research process and brings reliability.
89 Students from Bachelors degree in English.
SAMPLE AND SAMPLE PROCEDURE
Of the total population of 89 students from third year was considering the 73% of the total population conforming a 60 student’s sample. The sampling method and selection was following the procedure from a stratified sample (non-random). Which consist in previously divide the group in a homogenous way emphasizing a common characteristic.
-To obtain the data required in this investigation the following procedure was carried out꞉
-Then a written test of error analysis based on the TOEFL exam was administered to the 60 students selected in the sample.
-In the next step; each test was examined, the data collected and tabulated
-Also an analysis and interpretation of results was made to draw the general conclusions, subsequently to the error analysis approach and the kind or errors the students are aim to commit.
-Finally, a description was developed based on the results obtained.
The TOEFL or Test of English as a Foreign Language measures the ability of non- native English speakers to use and understand English as its read, written, heard and spoken in the university classroom.
WHAT IS THE TOEFL TEST?
The use of error analysis approach allows the measuring the level of grammar competence on students of third year of bachelor’s degree in English. Based on the interpretation of the data the percentage media of errors identified correctly was 24% percent showing the general level of grammar competence on these students.
The students from third year of bachelor’s degree in English have common problems to identify grammatical errors.
By applying grammar placement test, students from third year of bachelor’s degree in English show their abilities to identify grammatical errors.
The students from third year of bachelor’s degree in English are not in the level of grammatical competence required for their academic level, based on C.E.F.R.
It is recommended that students coursing third year of bachelor’s degree in English make a feedback on topics about subject verb agreement to enhance knowledge of grammar.
It is recommended that students take online test that evaluate grammar competence familiarized with error analysis approach, as it is one of the approaches used in the TOEFL test. Taking online tests will help them to improve their abilities on how to identify omission and addition errors.
It is recommended that the students read books in English as it will help them to memorize grammar structures of subject-verb agreement.
FOR THE STUDENTS
-Based on the results of the research it is recommended to apply error analysis approach in evaluations to help students develop their abilities to identify grammar errors.
-It is necessary to make a feedback and explain in classes some grammatical rules of subject verb-agreement to improve students’ grammar knowledge.
-We recommend for grammar teachers to apply short quizzes by using error analysis approach as a didactical activity.
FOR THE TEACHERS
It is recommended for the University to develop activities where the teachers may strengthen their abilities to use error analysis approach.
It is recommended for the University to develop diagnostic evaluations of the competencies that gathers the TOEFL test to reinforce the weaknesses and decrease the number of failing students at the moment of taking the TOEFL test.
