Irrational Fear of a Society By Shykeria Edwards McCarthyism The Crucible Present vs Past Salem Witch Trials COWS!!! "There's nothing to fear, but fear itself...." F.D.R. Communism McCarthyism The Crucible Salem Witch Trials of 1692 * WHAT ELSE? THE END Bibliography *Joseph McCarthy was a senator of Wisconsin in 1947 after being a judge in the 10th Judicial District Court. *McCarthy's rise to fame began on February 9, 1950, when, during a speech in Wheeling, West Virginia he claimed to have "a list of 205 ... names of people in the State Department that were made known to the Secretary of State as being members of the Communist Party ..." *The Tydings Committee, named for chairman Millard Tydings, opened in March 1950 to investigate what was termed the 'loyalty of State Department employees'. The committee was formed due not only to McCarthy's accusations but also to the fact that the number of Communist employees that he cited often varied. *Fort Monmouth was the base that Julius Rosenberg was accused of stealing military secrets from. This was also the base McCarthy originally began to investigate. *Joseph McCarthy never successfully convicted a single Communist, State Department employed or otherwise. *McCarthy was censured officially by the Senate. It was determined, by a vote of 75 to 12, that McCarthy's conduct brought the Senate into disrepute and was officially condemned. McCarthy died in May 1957 of cirrhosis of the liver while still a United States Senator. *It was written in 1953 as a response to McCarthyism after Miller was blacklisted. By: Arthur Miller *The panic of Communism during the Cold War and Senator Joseph McCarthy’s anti-communist hearings on February 3, 1953 led to this “irrational fear.” *Miller wanted to show this hysteria through one of his talents by using American history to show how this "irrational fear" can cause a hysteria that changes everything. *This play was based on the actual events of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692, but had fictional things added to it. For example, the names were a little different, Abigail was 11 instead of 17, and there were also boys in the group of children accusing people of witchcraft. - "Interesting Facts of the Crucible." 123HelpMe.com. 26 Sep 2012
<http://www.123HelpMe.com/view.asp?id=101996>. *There were 200 people accused of being witches and 19 were actually killed in Salem, Massachusetts. *Bridget Bishop was the first accused witch to be hanged, and she was accused of witchcraft earlier in her life by her third husband. It is believed that Bridget was, in all probability, a practicing witch. *When accused of being a witch by the Reverend Noyes, Sarah Good replied, 'I am no more a witch than you are a wizard, and if you take away my life God will give you blood to drink.' When the Reverend lay dying years later, he choked on his own blood. *During Rebecca Nurse's first trial, thirty-nine of her neighbors signed petitions stating they did not believe she was a witch. This included Jonathan and Edward Putman. They were the two who had originally sworn the complaint against her. STUPID!! Guess What?!? Ergot fungus grows on rye wheat. It is unaffected by freezing temperatures and is passed into the body through bread made from the wheat or milk from cows that eat the wheat. Scientists claim that this caused the unhealthy condition of the cows, while witches got the blame. Fear can cause chaos!! + America has experienced its fair share of hysteria and fear. + Many people have lost their lives because of accusations and fear gone overboard. "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."
