1983: The TV show gives the history of the Phantom. It gives the reason as to why the Phantom wears the mask. It shows that Erik, the Phantom, was burnt on the side of his face. He was later saved and taken to what is later known as his underground "lair," which is located under the Paris Opera House in the catacombs.

1990: Christine is sent by the Count De Chagny, Raoul, to the Paris Opera House for voice lessons. The Count intended for her to meet Gerard Carriere, the manager. Carriere has left by the time that Christine arrives and the new manager, Richard Cholet, won't let her sing. One of the workers in the costume department is killed by the Phantom of the Opera, Erik (Carriere's con), so Cholet employs her as a costume worker for his wife Carlotta, the lead, female soprano singer. He fights the Phantom, who is in the process of helping Christine succeed in her career. She believes Erik is the "Angel of Music" sent by her father in heaven. Christine is secretly tutored by the Phantom. However, the ending does not end as the Phantom wishes. She runs away with the Count De Chagny.
