Why "Vote For A Better India"?
"Exercising my franchise is something that I take seriously. If you don't vote and then complain about the system, you don't have the right to complain as you've not participated in the process,"
says the Indian
American astronaut Sunita Williams.
“Our votes are an important tool to bring about a change in the system; they give us an opportunity to raise our voice against injustice. By not voting we are encouraging the status quo"
- Sri Sri Ravishankar

Importance Of Voting
Our voice in the Indian Parliament
The Lok Sabha Elections is the most important direct democratic process of our country’s state of affair.
It allows electing the Members of the Parliament who will the voice of the 1.2 billion citizens in all decisions taken at national level.
Voting makes us morally eligible for expressing grievances or complaining
OUR VOTE WILL SHAPE OUR OWN WORLD
Voting is one such action, determines what sort of country we want to live in.Whether we vote or not, it is going to shape us and our country.
Majority of us did not vote, due to many reasons. Hence, we have been ignored.
Our Voting Upsets Political Calculations
Political parties know how many votes they are going to get, and they know how to get them. Hence, politicians themselves perpetuate the myth that it makes no difference if we vote or not. It is simple arithmetic that the fewer the people who come out to vote, the fewer the votes that are needed to win an election.
We have the power to bring a change
If we include our families, neighbors and colleagues, we form more than 50% of the voting population. This makes the disabled population of India as largest voting groups with significant power to influence the fate of any political establishment in India.
Voting
"I CAN VOTE ONLY FROM MY PLACE OF BIRTH/PERMANENT RESIDENCE"
Not true! You can register to vote from any place in India so long as you're an eligible voter .
"I DO NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT PROOF OF RESIDENCE TO REGISTER AS A VOTER"
Are you sure? Most voters, who think they lack necessary documents, actually do have them.
Did you know that the house lease agreement, mobile or landline bills or your driver's license are all accepted types of address proof documents?
Moreover, this document is required only for the BLO (Booth Level Officer) to come and verify your residence status. It is therefore not essential for the address proof document to directly have your name, but needs to only have the address of the place where you are staying. You can use address proof document on the name of your parents, relatives, friends etc. with whom you are staying.
Students, who are eligible voters, can register even from their hostels by submitting the Student Declaration Form signed by their college dean/principal/registrar along with the voter registration form.
"VOTER ID CARD IS ESSENTIAL FOR VOTING"
This is one of the most common voting myths!
Though voter identification is required by most states during voting, Voter ID card is not the only form of identification that is accepted. The Election Commission of India accepts most of the common documents as identity proof such as PAN card, driving license, ration card, student's ID card, passport etc.
In any case, it's a good idea to get your Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) since the Election Commission may make it mandatory in the future.
What is essential for voting however is that your name should be mentioned in the latest voters list of your constituency. How do you get to know that now? Just fill your relevant form and submit it to your constituency ERO office,

REGISTERING TO VOTE IS A VERY CUMBERSOME PROCESS
We would have agreed with you, but not anymore! Now you can easily register to vote with the following steps:
• Fill out the voter registration form. It's easy and takes only 3 minutes!
• Fill in other details (eg. name of family members already registered), if applicable
• Sign and submit this Form along with necessary address proof and identity proof document, at the office of your local Electoral Registration Officer (ERO). You will given the details of ERO office. DO NOT forget to ask the receipt for your application.
"THE ONLY 2 KINDS OF ELECTIONS ARE PARLIAMENTRY AND ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS"
As a registered voter you can vote in more than 2 elections! Besides Parliamentary and Assembly elections, you can also vote in your Local Body Elections or Municipal Elections (as called in cities).
India has a 3 tier federal structure with governments at the union, state and local levels. In cities, the Municipal Corporation is your Local Body or Local Government, and you can vote in Municipal Elections once every 5 years to elect your Corporator or Councilor. They in turn elect the municipal council and the mayor, who take all major decisions affecting your city.
To learn more about how your city's governance works, please visit your respective CITY page on this website. In villages, the Gram Panchayat functions as the Local Government with elections once every 5 years.
Additionally, if you are residing at Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Maharashtra or Uttar Pradesh and belong either to Teacher's Constituency or Graduate Constituency, you are also eligible to vote for Legislative Council elections, to elect your MLC.
Chief Election Commissioner of India -
Shri V.S.Sampath
CEO – Chief Electoral Officer (This is the state officer)
DEO – District Electoral Officer
DYDEO – Deputy District Electoral Officer.
Mr.Nitin gadre is for Maharashtra
This is for all the districts in the state, there could be as many DEOs for sake of administration.
ERO –Electoral registration officer
These are 1 per constituency in every district. We have to submit our forms to the respective ERO office.
BLO - Booth Level officers
There is usually 1 BLO per ERO per constituency. There could be more BLOs under each ERO during the time of election.
These BLOs are responsible for going door-to-door in their allotted respective areas.
It’s their duty to see if all the people in their area have registered.
Election hierarchy of India
Elected directly by President
FLAW & SOLUTION
FLAWS IN THE ROLES
One of the major flaws in the system is the working and tasks assigning of the BLO. These BLOs are full time government workers who have full time jobs and along with it, they are also allotted the door-to-door job. Also, these BLOs are not allotted their area of residence for doing their necessary work.
HOW VBI CAN PLAY A ROLE IN THE PROBLEM
VBI has identified this problem and as usual it is working for the solution. VBI wishes to bridge this gap amongst the common man and the government by being the direct tool for the government.
Hence in our procedure of getting people enrolled for voting, we will be allotting volunteers in their area of residence who will be doing the work of a BLO! And these volunteers will spend not more 3-4 hours in a week for this.
Eg: If there is a BLO who stays in Borivali and has a 9 to 5 job in Bandra, they will be allotted Bandra area for their door-to-door. This becomes a very tedious job for the BLO and he/she often is not able to cope up with it! This is one of the major reasons why most people don’t get registered to voting.

Process Of Voter Registration
If you have changed your address and you have been staying on that address for more than 6 months, you need to make a new voter ID card (if you had it previously).
If you are staying on rent an additional document is required to be submitted along with the address proof – this document is the NOC letter by your house owner along with your house agreement papers
If you are married and your surname has changed you need to provide ration card. Or marriage certificate . Proof used to show that you are married.
If any cancellations happen on the Voter ID form, the applicant’s signature will be required next to the cancellation.
If you are staying in a hostel you need to submit your ‘Student Declaration form’ signed by your dean/principal/registrar.
If you are submitting applications in bulk (more than 10) you will need a secretary letter head if the applications are from the society and the principal letter head if the applications are from the colleges.
• After putting these forms together, you will need to attest these forms by a notary.
• Submit your form to your constituency ERO office. Don’t forget to collect your Receipt! You can track the status of your form through your receipt number!
