The Beautiful Stars in the Sky
How many stars are in the sky?
The Milky Way is a flattened, disk shaped system that whirls around as if it is a pinwheel. The Milky Way consists of so many things, it goes on forever, or it is infinite. Stars are found in the Milky Way and you can find between 200 billion and 400 billion stars.
The Milky Way is a galaxy that is made of gas and dust. This giant galaxy contains about 400 billion stars. In this universe, there are billions of galaxies that exist just like the Milky Way. If the Milky Way has about 400 billion stars consisting in it, then you have to imagine billions of giant galaxies. Scientists believe that there are at least a million trillion stars in the universe.
Origin and number of constellations
A constellation is a group of stars that form in the sky to make a picture. .

Ancient people saw them as pictures in the sky. They have been spotted for hundreds of years.Scientists have spotted 88 main constellations.
The 12 constellations known as to be the zodiac were the Aries, the Ram; Sagittarius, the Archer; and Aquarius, the Water Carrier. This group of constellations was very important to the ancient peoples.
Along with the zodiac constellations, ancient people knew of 36 other constellations. These constellations were known as the Hercules, the Hero; Hydra, the Sea Serpent; and Centaurus, the Centaur (a half-human, half-horse creature).

How far away are stars from Earth?
The sun is also a star but it is different. Compared to other stars, the sun is quite close to the Earth. In fact the Earth is only 93 miles away from the sun. It would take 8 minutes for light from the sun to travel to Earth.
Some stars are so far away that the only way we could measure the distance is in light-years. One light-year is the distance that light travels in one year. That adds up to nearly 6 trillion miles! The sun is the closest star but in second place is the Alpha Centauri. But that star isn’t close at all. In fact, it’s about 4 light-years away. The brightest star is Sirius. Although it is the brightest, it doesn’t show up that way. Because Sirius is so far away it shows up in the sky as small and dim.
