03.11~ How Can We Clean Up an Oil Spill???
Transcript of 03.11~ How Can We Clean Up an Oil Spill???
How can an oil spill be cleaned up in the ocean?
If I allow the vegetable oil and water mixture cool in the refrigerator, then I will be able to scoop the oil off the surface of the water because when oil gets cold it solidifies, making it easier to remove it from the water then when it is in a liquid state.
1 measuring cup
1 cup of water
1/2 cup of vegetable oil
fill measuring up with 1 cup of water
add 2 drops of blue food coloring to water
pour 1/2 cup of vegetable oil into measuring up
put mixture into refrigerator for 1 hour
once oil has solidified, remove from fridge and use the spoon to remove the oil
Data Collected & Analysis
The oil is successfully removed from the water after being chilled.
Skimming can be used to effectively recover split oil from water.
The process of skimming would work in a natural environment, however i don't think that people can control the temperature of the ocean.
The lab worked out well for me. I only had to test it once, proving my hypothesis was correct.
If you put the oil and water mixture into the fridge to chill, then you can easily remove the oil from the waters surface
