Middle Leadership Project
Context...
A few statistics that underpin my choice of project title:

1: Nearly 80,000 children and young people suffer from severe depression within the UK every year, and these are only the ones that are reported.

2: Over 8,000 children aged under 14 years old suffer from severe depression

3: 68% of young people between the ages of 12-16 claimed that anxiety and stress was a key factor affecting their focus, concentration and ability to communicate effectively.
Project title...
'An investigation into whether a weekly meditation practice can improve focus, concentration and a reduction in stress levels for a group of year 7 pupils'
Anticipated effect on teaching and learning...
Sustained meditative practice over an 8 week period can improve focus and concentration, this will feed in to lessons
It reduces the amount of time spent lost in thought (daydreaming)
Can significantly reduce levels of stress and anxiety therefore improving the ability to form effective relationships with others.
Significant increase in positive mood.

Objectives...
To perform guided meditation for 10 minutes per week on a year 7 group (Form 7G)
To measure progress by recording results of memory tests and emotional intelligence tests before and after investigation
To monitor progress and behavior of all pupils throughout the year
'One problem with our current society is that we have an attitude towards education as if it is there to simply make you more intelligent, make you more ingenious. Even though our society does not emphasize this, the most important use of knowledge and education is to help us understand the importance of engaging in more wholesome actions and bringing about discipline in our minds. The proper utilization of our intelligence and knowledge is to effect change from within and develop a good heart'
