Transcript of BIOMASS

ENVIRONMENTAL CRITERIA
GHG emissions and forest ecosystem carbon
Air emissions: The goal is to produce significantly fewer emissions.
Land quality and forest site productivity
Hydrology and water quality
Biodiversity and terrestrial habitat
ECONOMIC CRITERIA
SOCIAL CRITERIA
Aboriginal peoples’ rights: Aboriginal people should have the authority to control biomass operations on their lands. Their rights must be respected on their traditional lands.
Community engagement: Meaningful public participation in forest management planning and biomass operations should be designed to respect the rights of others to use lands and not be adversely affected.

Biomass is fuel that is developed from organic materials, a renewable and sustainable source of energy used to create electricity or other forms of power.
CARBON CYCLE
In biomass power plants, wood waste or other waste is burned to produce steam that runs a turbine to make electricity, or that provides heat to industries and homes.
ADVANTAGES
• Renewable
• Readily available
• Dispatchable
• Part of the natural carbon cycle
• Local resource

WHAT IS BIOMASS?
Well-being of workers and local communities: A biomass sector should create new employment opportunities in the community, improve income and education and reduce poverty levels.
Economic indicators: The biomass sector should contribute to gross domestic product and the economic well-being of a community.
Biomass thermal energy is the use of biomass for space and domestic water heating, process heat, and the thermal portion of combined heat and power
One-third of the totoal energy consumption in the United States is thermal energy, and this energy mostly comes from fossil fuels
