Transcript of APA Ethical Guidelines

Definition: Psychoactive drugs are addictive substances with mood and perception altering effects. Examples of such drugs include caffeine, alcohol, cannabis, and amphetamines, to name a few.

Real-Application: I often resort to caffeine as a stimulant to help increase my energy level and effeciency to get through an essay or early morning workload.
Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Motivation
Definition: Intrinsic motivation is when you do something because of a personal reward (knowledge, competency, etc.) and Extrinsic motivation is when you do something for an external reward (money, award, etc.).
Personality Assessments
Definition: A personality assessment is simply the measurement of personal characteristics.

Real-life Application: For job or class applications in the past I have been asked to complete such assessments to determine if my personality coincided with that of the job position or course agenda. I have taken personality assessments to help me scope out what career would best fit my wants or needs.
Depersonalization Disorder
Definition:This is when there’s a "dissociation" or lack of connection between one’s thoughts, feelings, emotions and identity.

Real-life Application: To a mild extent, I experience a dissconnect from my true identity or emotions when I am daydreaming or something of the sort.
Parenting Styles
Definition: Parenting styles are the representation of how parents respond and demand to their children. There are three types of parenting styles that represent the broader patterns of parenting practices. These include authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive.
Psychoactive Drugs
Real-Life Application: The parenting style of my parents at this time is a mostyl authoritative though slightly permissive. My parent's enforce rules and expect those rules to be followed, however, they definitely encourage independence and allow me to make my own decisions when the time is appropriate. They allow me to manage my time and sleep schedules on my own, this has allowed me to experience the consequences that come with a lack of sleep and the advantage of sleep with a first hand experience.
Real-life Application: Going to the gym would be an example of me applying intrinsic motivation in real life. Whenever I go to the gym, I am not receiving an external reward. Instead, I feel great about myself because I completed a workout and I found it to be enjoyable. Going to work would be an example of me applying extrinsic motivation in real life. I work my butt of in return for an external reward: money.
